Synopsis 21st-Century Statecraft by : Nayef Al-Rodhan

This book proposes an innovative and comprehensive framework for conducting statecraft in the 21st century. Called neo-statecraft, this framework is based on the reconciliation of power, interests and justice. The author proposes four substrates of neo-statecraft: 1) a new structure he calls meta-geopolitics, which includes seven inter-related dimensions of state power and identifies a Geostrategic Tripwire Pivotal Corridor (TPC); 2) a sustainable national security paradigm that stresses the centrality of justice, symbiotic realism and transcultural synergy; 3) a new concept called just power, which states that power must be smart as well as just, and that global justice is above all a national interest of all states; and 4) a new concept called reconciliation statecraft of the eight global interests. Dr. Nayef R.F. Al-Rodhan is Senior Scholar in Geostrategy and Director of the Programme on the Geopolitical Implications of Globalisation and Transnational Security at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Geneva, Switzerland.

Synopsis 21st Century Power by : Brent D Ziarnick

This book uses the 21st Century Foundations series format to re-introduce to the military community the writings of General Thomas S. Power, the third Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Air Command (SAC). His unappreciated works contain many insights into military topics such as technology and the arms race, the nature of deterrence, and the military utility of space. Unifying all of these writings was Power’s quest to maintain nuclear superiority over the Soviet Union. Although Power is considered a quintessential Cold Warrior, his ideas are timely considering today’s challenges of re-energizing the morale and technology of U.S. strategic forces in the wake of foreign advances, discerning what deterrence means in the “Second Nuclear Age,” and planning the future of space and cyber power.

Synopsis War and Power in the Twenty-First Century by : Paul Hirst

Future developments in war, armed conflict and internationalrelations are central to our collective fate in this century. Thisbook looks forward by considering the forces that will drivechanges in military organizations, sources of conflict, the powerof states and the nature of the international system. New military technologies will alter how wars are fought and willinfluence the balance of power. Changes in the global environmentwill provide new causes of conflict and will change economicpriorities. As a result, the state will survive as the key socialinstitution and populations will look to it to acquire and todistribute scarce resources like water, energy and land. Many ofthe changes that seem transformatory today, like globalization, theinternet and mass consumerism, will be shown to be less significantthan we believe them to be. Hirst puts such changes into perspective by comparing them with therevolutionary changes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries inEurope: the firepower revolution, the rise of the sovereignterritorial state and the parallel development of the internationalsystem, and the creation of world trade. These basic structures ofthe modern world are still with us and will remain, despite majorchanges in twenty-first-century society. This book will appeal to students of politics, political sociology& international relations as well as the interested generalreader.

Synopsis Global Security in the Twenty-First Century by : Sean Kay

This thoroughly updated edition of Global Security in the Twenty-First Century offers a balanced introduction to contemporary security dilemmas throughout the world. Sean Kay assesses the impact of the global economic crisis on international security and considers how the range of thinking about power and peace has evolved in relation to major flashpoints including in the Middle East, Asia, and Eurasia. Kay builds on the first and second edition’s emphasis on the roles of trade and technology, the militarization of space, the privatization of security, the use of sanctions, ethnic conflict, and transnational crime. This edition goes even farther to incorporate traditional thinking about national security in the context of human rights, democracy, population, health, environment, energy, and especially education. The author includes full updates on emerging challenges out of Iraq, Russia, and viral diseases in the context of larger strategic questions like the rise of China and America’s “pivot” to rebalance its priorities toward Asia. Writing in an engaging style, Kay integrates traditional and emerging challenges in one easily accessible study that gives readers the tools they need to develop a thoughtful and nuanced understanding of global security.
