Synopsis Power Amplifiers for the S-, C-, X- and Ku-bands by : Mladen Božanić

This book provides a detailed review of power amplifiers, including classes and topologies rarely covered in books, and supplies sufficient information to allow the reader to design an entire amplifier system, and not just the power amplification stage. A central aim is to furnish readers with ideas on how to simplify the design process for a preferred power amplifier stage by introducing software-based routines in a programming language of their choice. The book is in two parts, the first focusing on power amplifier theory and the second on EDA concepts. Readers will gain enough knowledge of RF and microwave transmission theory, principles of active and passive device design and manufacturing, and power amplifier design concepts to allow them to quickly create their own programs, which will help to accelerate the transceiver design process. All circuit designers facing the challenge of designing an RF or microwave power amplifier for frequencies from 2 to 18 GHz will find this book to be a valuable asset.

Synopsis Ku-band Modular MMICs for Up to 5W Power Blocks for VSAT Applications by :

An innovative approach to a quick design of multi-watts Ku-band power amplifiers for VSAT up-link applications is proposed. Starting from a set of specifically developed MMIC power macrocells, a modular imptementation is used to combine them into power modules requiring no adjustment and delivering up to 5W with 24dB associated gain in the 14-15.5GHz frequency band. The basic MMIC single chips exhibit a ldB gain compression output power of respectively : 200mW, 500mW and 1.6W. 3 W and 5W power modules are presented as examples.

Synopsis Ku-band High Power Amplifier System Functionality and Operation by : Cheng-Chuan Feng

The subsystems and their respective functionality of a ku-band high power amplifier are carefully documented. Figures identifying physical components, wiring, contact points, switches, and valves with their labels on the system blueprints are presented. These figures will be helpful if system performance parameter adjustments are desired. Operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and testing procedures are also included to make this thesis a self-contained operator's manual for the high power amplifier.

Synopsis Development of a Cw Ku-band Traveling-wave Amplifier by : John T. Benton

The program objective was to advance the state of the art of high power Ku-band amplifier tubes by increasing instantaneous bandwidth and raising the frequency of operation. A coupled cavity, solenoid focused, modulating anode controlled traveling-wave amplifier was designed and an experimental model was fabricated, tested, and delivered. Three hundred (300) watts minimum and up to 1170 watts of CW power output was measured over a 2 GHz bandwidth at Ku-band. The technical soundess was thus demonstrated with an overall efficiency of greater than 24% over a substantial portion of the band. Recommendations were made for improvements in the design to increase power output and consequently gain and efficiency over the lowest 300 MHz in the band. (Author).

Synopsis CMOS 60-GHz and E-band Power Amplifiers and Transmitters by : Dixian Zhao

This book focuses on the development of design techniques and methodologies for 60-GHz and E-band power amplifiers and transmitters at device, circuit and layout levels. The authors show the recent development of millimeter-wave design techniques, especially of power amplifiers and transmitters, and presents novel design concepts, such as "power transistor layout" and "4-way parallel-series power combiner", that can enhance the output power and efficiency of power amplifiers in a compact silicon area. Five state-of-the-art 60-GHz and E-band designs with measured results are demonstrated to prove the effectiveness of the design concepts and hands-on methodologies presented. This book serves as a valuable reference for circuit designers to develop millimeter-wave building blocks for future 5G applications.
