This book presents interdisciplinary research carried out on the Roman sites of pottery workshops active within the coastal area of the province of Dalmatia as well as on material recovered during the excavations.

32 papers consider issues of pottery production in the wider Adriatic area during Roman times, in particular relation to landscape and communication features, ceramic building materials, as well as general studies on ceramic production, pottery and glass finds.

Spanning the period between the 2nd and 9th centuries, this volume collects 45 papers dealing with the Adriatic area that aim to create a new dataset for the historical reconstruction of processes related to forms of settlement, aspects of production, and trade and the movement of pottery and other craft products between its two coasts.

This book examines a large group of amphorae from the quarter of St. Theodore in Pula, Croatia, used for drainage and levelling as part of the construction of the terrace of the Roman temple complex and adjacent public thermae. Investigations in 2005-2007 uncovered 2119 amphorae, of which 1754 were extracted and thoroughly documented.

Over the past decades, archaeological field surveys and excavations have greatly enriched our knowledge of the Roman countryside Drawing on such new data, the volume The Economic Integration of Roman Italy, edited by Tymon de Haas and Gijs Tol, presents a series of papers that explore the changes Rome’s territorial and economic expansion brought about in the countryside of the Italian peninsula. By drawing on a variety of source materials (e.g. pottery, settlement patterns, environmental data), they shed light on the complexity of rural settlement and economies on the local, regional and supra-regional scales. As such, the volume contributes to a re-assessment of Roman economic history in light of concepts such as globalisation, integration, economic performance and growth.

How were space and movement in Roman cities affected by economic life? What can the study of Roman urban landscapes tell us about the nature of the Roman economy? These are the central questions addressed in this volume. While there exist many studies of Roman urban space and of the Roman economy, rarely have the two topics been investigated together in a sustained fashion. In this volume, an international team of archaeologists and historians focuses explicitly on the economics of space and mobility in Roman Imperial cities, in both Italy and the provinces, east and west. Employing many kinds of material and written evidence and a wide range of methodologies, the contributors cast new light both on well-known and on less-explored sites. With their direct focus on the everyday economic uses of urban spaces and the movements through them, the contributors offer a fresh and innovative perspective on the workings of Roman urban economies and on the debates concerning space in the Roman world. This volume will be of interest to archaeologists and historians, both those studying the Greco-Roman world and those focusing on urban economic space in other periods and places as well as to other scholars studying premodern urbanism and urban economies.

Environment and Society in the Long Late Antiquity brings together scientific, archaeological and historical evidence on the interplay of social change and environmental phenomena at the end of Antiquity and the dawn of the Middle Ages, covering the period ca. 300-800 AD. It gives a new impetus to the study of the environmental history of this crucial period of transition between two major epochs in premodern history. The volume contains both systematic overviews of the previous scholarship and available data, as well as a number of interdisciplinary case studies. The policy of systematic destruction of the cultural heritage in the Serbian-Bosnian-Croation war has led to the loss of many prehistoric and historic remains in Dalmatia. Since many of the sites can no longer be visited, this project, in the Zadar lowlands, represents the last chance for a generation to study the archaeological and paleo-environmental field remains of the largest and most fertile plain in the East Adriatic. The core fieldwork consisted of an intensive field survey of over 120 sq. km of lowland, trial excavations on six sites (from Neolthic to Roman) and soil investigations of the total surveyed area. One archive-based chapter discusses the history of the area in the early medieval and Ottoman periods. A project of immense value heightened by the tragic background against which it must now be read.

L’interesse è rivolto alla Grecia e alle aree della grecità attraverso il tempo, dalla preistoria all’età bizantina e oltre, nonché alle interazioni con l’Oriente, l’Africa e l’Europa continentale. L’Annuario è composto da tre sezioni: Saggi, Scavi e Ricerche e Atti della Scuola 2021, a cura di Emanuele Papi. Gli articoli vengono approvati dal Comitato Editoriale e da due valutatori anonimi. I contributi sono pubblicati in una delle seguenti lingue: italiano, greco, inglese, francese, con riassunti in italiano, greco e inglese.
