First published in 1985, this collection of essays deals with processes of population movement and how they have operated over time. It is also about people: Melanesian’s who number some five million and inhabit the region stretching from the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya to the Independent State of Fiji. Standard work on Movement in third world societies has emphasized migration, involving a shift in residence from one domicile to another, at the expense of the interchange of people between diverse places and different circumstances. Many moves, as from villages and towns, are circulatory: they begin at, go away from, but ultimately end in the same dwelling place and community. This book focuses on the full range of territorial mobility, especially circulation, and its meanings for the people involved. This volume brings together indigenous scholars, foreign field researchers, and international authorities from many of the social sciences: anthropology, demography, economics, geography and sociology. It presents a set of multicultural statements about the mobility of particular peoples within a region of the third world. This collection about specifically Melanesian issues aims to stimulate broader visions among population scholars, and it underlines the pressing need for more theoretical and empirical work on a volatile, yet neglected, category of population movement.

Circulation is common in Third World countries and involves reciprocal flows of people, goods and ideas. The essays in this volume, first published in1985, discuss concepts associated with circulation in its various forms, and they present empirical evidence based on field work from holistic, ecological, social, and economic points of view. Contributions from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Pacific come from an international group of authors representing a variety of disciplines in the social sciences. All who are concerned with social and economic development need to recognise the importance of circulation at all levels of society and polity.

First published in 2000, this volume draws from the result of the fieldwork conducted in Yogyakarta Special Region in 1991 and 1992, with the aim of assessing the consequences of the strengthening of urban-rural linkages upon local development in five hinterland communities and an emphasis on employment issues – especially with regard to diversification of the economy. Vincent Rotgé, Ryanto Rijanta and Ida Bagoes explore issues including non-permanent migrations, piedmont and mountain communities and the transition from an agrarian to an urban society.

Perhaps because I grew up on a farm in Ohio, I have long been interested in rural development. Although I fll'St became a migrant at the age of 17 when I left the farm to continue my studies in a city college, I was not aware of the relation between rural development and migration until many years later when I began studying patterns of urban and rural poverty. This research has grown out of my continuing investigation of the ways that migration .has been seen as both a response to chronic conditions of rural poverty and a factor potentially exacerbating urban poverty conditions. If governments wanted to deal with urban poverty, they would want to restrict urban in-migration, yet if they reduced urban in-migration, this would remove one of the important means available to persons seeking to raise themselves out of rural impoverishment. This would clearly be a no-win situation for the rural poor; the only way to deal fairly with both urban and rural poverty would be to foster socio-economic development of rural areas. Thus, I became interested in studying the patterns of rural development which actually have had an effect on the migration decisions of rural families.

This study explores the relationship between outmigration and gender roles in two villages in North Tapanuli, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. In a symbolic sense, land and women have always represented security to Toba Batak men as they travelled in search of a livelihood. The main purpose of this study is to throw light on the options open to the women staying behind and the adjustments they make, as well as their reasons for making them. The approach followed is an anthropological one. It combines an analysis of actor-oriented perceptions and strategies with an insight into the structural forces that formed the context of migration as it developed from the late nineteenth century through the colonial period until today.

This book examines the history of the political demography of Indonesia. Chronologically, the book begins by introducing the colonization program as a predecessor of transmigration program after independence. The transmigration program, Indonesia’s state policy on migration, is discussed at length in the book but other migration related issues are also presented to show the complex relationship between migration and other social, economic and political issues in Indonesia. In the final chapter, the book discusses the contemporary issues and challenges of disintegration that is facing Indonesia as a nation-state. The book ends with an epilog that shows Indonesia’s political demography challenges in the 21st Century.

The International Conference on Strategic and Global Studies is organized by the School of Strategic and Global Studies (SSGS), Universitas Indonesia. The ICSGS conference is an annual meeting event involving lecturers, students and researchers who are concerned with contemporary national and international issues that are directly related to the problems faced by the government and the private sector using a multidisciplinary approach. Participants of this conference came from the ASEAN region and the global network of the Universitas Indonesia.
