Synopsis High Energy Polarized Proton Beams by : Georg Heinz Hoffstaetter

This book examines the acceleration and storage of polarized proton beams in cyclic accelerators. Basic equations of spin motion are reviewed, the invariant spin field is introduced, and an adiabatic invariant of spin motion is derived. The text presents numerical methods for computing the invariant spin field, and displays the results in numerous illustrations. This book offers a more lucid view of spin dynamics at high energy than has hitherto been available.

Synopsis High-energy Nuclear Optics of Polarized Particles by : Vladimir G. Baryshevsky

The various phenomena caused by refraction and diffraction of polarized elementary particles in matter have opened up a new research area in the particle physics: nuclear optics of polarized particles. Effects similar to the well-known optical phenomena such as birefringence and Faraday effects, exist also in particle physics, though the particle wavelength is much less than the distance between atoms of matter. Current knowledge of the quasi-optical effects, which exist for all particles in any wavelength range (and energies from low to extremely high), will enable us to investigate different properties of interacting particles (nuclei) in a new aspect. This pioneering book will provide detailed accounts of quasi-optical phenomena in the particle polarization, and will interest physicists and professionals in experimental particle physics.

Synopsis ACCELERATION OF POLARIZED PROTONS TO HIGH ENERGY. by :

High energy polarized beam collisions will open up the unique physics opportunities of studying spin effects in hard processes. However, the acceleration of polarized beams in circular accelerators is complicated by the numerous depolarizing spin resonances. Using a partial Siberian Snake and a rf dipole that ensure stable adiabatic spin motion during acceleration has made it possible to accelerate polarized protons to 25 GeV at the Brookhaven AGS. Full Siberian Snakes and polarimeters are being developed for RHIC to make the acceleration of polarized protons to 250 GeV possible. A similar scheme is being studied for the 800 GeV HERA proton accelerator.

Synopsis Acceleration of Polarized Protons at the AGS. by :

Spin physics in the past has provided an acid test of many models and theories and over the last decade has revealed new and unexpected phenomena to confront present day theories. This work received great impetus from the experiments at the ZGS, where for the first time multi-GeV polarized beams became available. This, in conjunction with polarized targets, allowed the complete specification of the initial quantum states in high energy proton-proton interactions and led to many startling new results. Although spin effects were important at the previously measured lower energies, practically all theorists felt that spin effects would become negligible at higher energies. Instead, the ZGS results showed in many cases even larger effects than those observed at lower energies. By the time the ZGS was shut down in 1979, high energy polarized proton projects were planned for KEK in Japan, SATURNE in France, and the AGS at Brookhaven. At present, serious thought is being given to high energy polarized proton beams at Fermilab, CERN, and indeed in planning for the Superconducting Super Collider. Today, I would like to describe the facility at Brookhaven and give you the present status of the project. We have been in the commissioning phase for the last three months on a part-time basis. To date we have injected 7 .mu. A of polarized protons with 70% polarization. We have accelerated a peak of 6.4 x 109 polarized protons to 10.3 GeV/c and have made a first pass at correcting about a dozen imperfection resonances and two intrinsic resonances. We believe that this first tune gave us about an 80% polarization survival from injection to 10.3 GeV/c. The goal was to achieve 26 GeV/c polarized protons with about an 80% polarization survival and an intensity greater than 101° per pulse.

Synopsis Polarized Protons and RHIC. by :

RHIC, the heavy ion collider being built at Brookhaven, offers an exciting opportunity to collide highly polarized protons at high energy and luminosity. This new facility would combine the existing AGS polarized proton capability with the new Booster/Accumulator and spin rotators to achieve collisions between intense beams of polarized protons at a collision energy of 500 GeV. At this energy and the expected luminosity of 2 x 1032 cm2/second physics probes will include high P{sub T} jets, direct photons, Drell-Yan, W{sup {plus minus}}, and heavy quarks. The accessible physics includes study of the spin content of the proton, particularly gluon and antiquark polarization, study of large PQCD-predicted asymmetries for parton-parton subprocesses, and parity violation studies and searches. The proton spin direction at a RHIC crossing can be longitudinal or transverse and can alternate bunch-to-bunch giving exquisite control of systematic errors. At RHIC double spin experiments can be done with pure beams and the energy and luminosity open a new domain for probing the physics of spin. An international collaboration is forming which proposes to exploit the unique physics available from a polarized RHIC. Important steps, leading to a polarized RHIC, have been taken. The AGS has already accelerated polarized protons. A new Booster/Accumulator has been commissioned. A beautiful series of machine experiments at Indian University have verified that spin rotators indeed remove spin resonance behavior, which is the key to achieving polarized proton acceleration to high energy. E880, an accelerator experiment which will build, install, and test a Siberian Snake in the AGS, was approved by the Brookhaven PAC in August 1991. The snake will be installed in the AGS in the summer of 1993. RHIC construction has started, with heavy ion experiments to begin in 1997.
