The PMNCH Annual Report presents the highlights of the work done in 2022 to bring more voice to those advocating for women’s, children’s, and adolescents’ health and well-being while also holding leaders and governments accountable to promises made. The annual report fulfils our reporting commitments to donors, the Board and 1400 member organizations.

Millions of women, children and adolescents continue to die from preventable, treatable causes, while many more are threatened by the ongoing polycrisis of conflict, climate change, cost of living and crises. With advocacy as its core function and together with its nearly 1500 partners, PMNCH seeks changes in policy, financing and services for the most vulnerable women, children and adolescents across the world and holds each other accountable for delivering on promises. The PMNCH Annual Report presents the highlights of the impact achieved in 2023 across three main focus areas: maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH); sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); and adolescent well-being (AWB).

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic stuck, driving PMNCH partners to regroup and adopt measures to prevent the pandemic from becoming a lasting crisis for women, children and adolescents. The PMNCH Annual Report presents highlights of the work done in 2020 to ensure that underserved and vulnerable groups received greater investments, effective policies, and improved services.

The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

In Uganda, conditions in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCAH) remain the primary drivers of morbidity and mortality, accounting for 60 percent of years of life lost. The high burden of these conditions can be attributed to a poor quality of care resulting from inadequate financial, human, and material resources compounded by weak multisectoral coordination. Moreover, the country's high population growth rate and a young population imply that RMNCAH service delivery will continue to dominate health sector reforms--even with the increasing prevalence of noncommunicable and infectious diseases. Over the past two decades, Uganda has focused on improving the quality of RMNCAH service delivery, leading to declines in the maternal, infant, and under-five mortality ratios and the increased use of modern contraception among married women. However, the neonatal mortality and teenage pregnancy rates have stagnated, and the low civil registration of births and deaths remains challenging. Investing in Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health in Uganda: What Have We Learned, and Where Do We Go from Here? comprises 12 studies conducted as part of the RMNCAH Operational Research Program drafted between 2019 and 2021 and finalized and disseminated in October 2022 across 45 districts of Uganda with funding from Sweden and the World Bank. These studies underscore important lessons learned and offer suggestions for enhancing the delivery of RMNCAH interventions. Each chapter represents one study and discusses service delivery, the health workforce, financing, health information systems, and governance and leadership. Two appendixes summarize key findings and recommendations and explain the roles of key stakeholders in the RMNCAH Operational Research Program.

The proceedings set LNCS 13231, 13232, and 13233 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing, ICIAP 2022, which was held during May 23-27, 2022, in Lecce, Italy, The 168 papers included in the proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 307 submissions. They deal with video analysis and understanding; pattern recognition and machine learning; deep learning; multi-view geometry and 3D computer vision; image analysis, detection and recognition; multimedia; biomedical and assistive technology; digital forensics and biometrics; image processing for cultural heritage; robot vision; etc.
