Synopsis Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by : Benson John Lossing

Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 2 An essential part of the original plan of the writer, and which has been carried out, was to make a personal visit to the principal battle-fields and other places of interest connected with the Civil War. This could not be done within the Con federate lines during the war, and it was difficult to do 'so in many places for several months after: the conflict had ceased. As much as possible of this labor was accomplished before the completion of the first volume, in which the events of the con flict, civil and military, to the close of the first battle of Bull's Run, are recorded. It comprises a record of the events of the conflict from midsummer of 1863, until the close of the struggle, in the field, in the spring of 1865. It also contains a record of the important movements in Eastern and Southeastern Tennessee, which were followed by Sherman's great march and series of confiicts from Chattanooga, byway of Atlanta, to the sea, and thence through the Carolinas; and the expulsion of the Confederates from Tennessee, by Thomas. It bears a record of the stirring events in the Red River region; in Texas; all along the Mississippi, and in the States whose borders are washed by its waters; at Mobile, and in the interior of the States of Mississippi and Alabama, and the final triumph of the National arms in all the vast region of the Republic southward of the Roanoke River and westward of the mountain ranges of Virginia, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina.
