In Volume 6 of the Advances in Solar Energy we have specifically targeted for a review the rich experience of the Power Utilities. Their hands-on experience in a large variety of means to employ solar energy conversion and to evaluate the technical and economical feasibilities is of great importance to their future use. In designing the lay-out for this volume, we wanted to collect all relevant information, including success and failures and wanted to emphasize the lessons learned from each type of experiment. The publication of such a review now has the advantage of a settled experience in the first phase of solar involvement of the utility industry with a large amount of data analyzed. We are confident that this information will be of great value to direct the future development of the solar energy mix within this industry. We have added to this set of reviews three articles which deal with the most promising high-technology part of solar energy conversion using exclusively solid state devices: solar cells. The development over the last two decades from barely 10% to now in excess of 30% conversion efficiency is breathtaking. In addition, the feasibility of economic midrange efficient thin-film technology holds the promise of opening large sc ale markets in the near future. This field will enter head-on competition for large power generation with more conventional technology.

The Green Solar Cities, EU-Concerto project focuses on the practical large scale implementation of solar energy technologies in combination with new build and retrofit low energy building in the cities of Copenhagen, with its city part Valby, in Denmark and Salzburg in Austria. This book aims to influence decision makers in European cities towards a similar approach to the Green Solar Cities project, in close cooperation with leading building component suppliers, energy companies and engaged builders also working with local city officials. This book will benefit those in a situation where many cities aim at a "Smart City" development, but without clear policies of how to achieve that in practice. In Denmark there are similar policies, with an overall aim to be CO2 neutral by year 2025 in the city of Copenhagen. However, there is still a lack of understanding concerning, how solar energy as the world’s number one energy source can play a major role here and how this can be combined with energy efficiency policies, use of district heating and combined heat and power. The general aim is to introduce the international "Active House" standard and work on "Active Roofs" of the future. The connection between solar energy and low energy building and energy renovation is aimed to be ensured by help of the "Active House" standard which has been developed in cooperation with a number of leading building component manufacturers in Europe.

"This 4th volume in the established Energy From The Desert series examines and evaluates the potential and feasibility of Very Large Scale Photovoltaic Power Generation (VLS-PV) systems, which have capacities ranging from several megawatts to gigawatts, and to develop practical project proposals toward implementing the VLS-PV systems in the future. Comprehensively analysing all major issues involved in such large scale applications, based on the latest scientific and technological developments and by means of close international co-operation with experts from different countries. From the perspective of the global energy situation, global warming, and other environmental issues, it is apparent that VLS-PV systems can: contribute substantially to global energy needs; become economically and technologically feasible soon; contribute significantly to the global environment protection; contribute significantly to socio-economic development. Energy policies around the world are gradually changing direction to focus less on nuclear energy with the expectation to turn to denuclearization entirely with the negative impacts of nuclear energy, while in parallel the importance of and expectations for renewable energy technologies are increasing drastically as possible energy infrastructure, as well as environmental friendly technology. This book recognises that very large scale solar electricity generation provides economic, social and environmental benefits, security of electricity supply and fair access to affordable and sustainable energy solutions and that VLS-PV systems must be one of the promising options for large-scale deployment of PV systems and renewable energy technologies"--
