Synopsis Advances in Microbial Ecology by : M. Alexander

Microbial ecology has come of age. A long history of exploratory research and problem definition is admittedly behind us, and outstanding scientists from many regions of the world have contributed major findings to the development of the discipline. The early literature is indeed vast and impressive, yet it is still fair to say that the field is just beginning to develop in a mature fashion. The major microbial habitats and the chief inhabitants have been delineated and are only now being adequately explored; the processes that are brought about by the microscopic residents are at the present time being investigated in definitive ways; new concepts are being formulated; and novel, exciting, and useful techniques have been devised. In recognition of the emergence of microbial ecology as a rapidly growing and independent discipline, the International Commission on Microbial Ecology-a unit of the International Association of Micro biological Societies and the Division of Environmental Biology of the Inter national Union of Biological Societies-has established the Advances in Microbial Ecology and has appointed an editor and editorial board for the series. The purposes of this review series are to present in one group of volumes an overview of the information that is now spread in an enormous array of technical journals, to have authors in various areas of microbial ecology summarize and present views in depth of their own specialties, and to help promote the continued growth of microbial ecology.

Synopsis Applied Manure and Nutrient Chemistry for Sustainable Agriculture and Environment by : Zhongqi He

Due to the rapid increase in world population and improving living standards, the global agriculture sector is confronting with challenges for the sustainability of agricultural production and of the environment. Intensive high-yield agriculture is typically dependent on addition of fertilizers (synthetic chemicals, animal manure, etc.). However, non-point nutrient losses from agricultural fields due to fertilization could adversely impact the environment. Increased knowledge on plant nutrient chemistry is required for improving utilization efficiency and minimizing loses from both inorganic and organic nutrient sources. For this purpose, the book is composed of 19 chapters that highlight recent research activities in applied nutrient chemistry geared toward sustainable agriculture and environment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to speciation, quantification, and interactions of various plant nutrients and relevant contributories in manure, soil, and plants. This book outlooks emerging researchable issues on alternative utilization and environmental monitoring of manure and other agricultural by products that may stimulate new research ideas and direction in the relevant fields.

Synopsis Advances in the Development of Artificial Metalloenzymes by : Tatjana N. Parac-Vogt

Reactions catalyzed by metalloenzymes have great potential for applications in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. While only a few of these enzymes have yet been used in such applications, in the last few decades numerous efficient, selective, environmentally friendly and economical synthetic analogues have been described, including supramolecular, polymeric, nanoparticulate and lowmolecular- weight organometallic complexes, and metal organic frameworks. In this Research Topic, we present a collection of original research and review articles that show significant recent advances made in the rational design of such artificial metalloenzymes.

Synopsis Nanozymes: Next Wave of Artificial Enzymes by : Xiaoyu Wang

This book describes the fundamental concepts, the latest developments and the outlook of the field of nanozymes (i.e., the catalytic nanomaterials with enzymatic characteristics). As one of today’s most exciting fields, nanozyme research lies at the interface of chemistry, biology, materials science and nanotechnology. Each of the book’s six chapters explores advances in nanozymes. Following an introduction to the rise of nanozymes research in the course of research on natural enzymes and artificial enzymes in Chapter 1, Chapters 2 through 5 discuss different nanomaterials used to mimic various natural enzymes, from carbon-based and metal-based nanomaterials to metal oxide-based nanomaterials and other nanomaterials. In each of these chapters, the nanomaterials’ enzyme mimetic activities, catalytic mechanisms and key applications are covered. In closing, Chapter 6 addresses the current challenges and outlines further directions for nanozymes. Presenting extensive information on nanozymes and supplemented with a wealth of color illustrations and tables, the book offers an ideal guide for readers from disparate areas, including analytical chemistry, materials science, nanoscience and nanotechnology, biomedical and clinical engineering, environmental science and engineering, green chemistry, and novel catalysis.

Synopsis Some Chemicals Present in Industrial and Consumer Products, Food and Drinking-water by : IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans

This volume of the IARC Monographs provides an assessment of the carcinogenicity of 18 chemicals present in industrial and consumer products or food (natural constituents, contaminants, or flavorings) or occurring as water-chlorination by-products. The compounds evaluated include the widely used plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and the food contaminant 4-methylimidazole. In view of the limited agent-specific information available from epidemiological studies, the IARC Monographs Working Group relied mainly on carcinogenicity bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to evaluate the carcinogenic hazards to humans exposed to these agents.
