Synopsis Pesticide Residues in Food 2019 by : Food and Agriculture Organization

This publication reports on the 2019 Joint Meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the World Health Organization (WHO) Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues (JMPR). The meeting evaluated 30 pesticides, including eight new compounds and three compounds that were re-evaluated for toxicity or residues, or both, within the periodic review programme of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR). This print version does not include Annexes 3, 4 and 6. During the meeting, the FAO Panel of Experts was responsible for reviewing pesticide use patterns (use of good agricultural practices), data on the chemistry and composition of the pesticides and methods of analysis for pesticide residues and for estimating the maximum residue levels that might occur as a result of the use of the pesticides according to good agricultural practices. The WHO Core Assessment Group was responsible for reviewing toxicological and related data and for estimating, where possible and appropriate, acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and acute reference doses (ARfDs) of the pesticides for humans. The recommendations of the Joint Meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties.

Synopsis Pesticide residues in food 2018 - Report 2018 - Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This meeting, held in Berlin, Germany, on 18-27 September 2018, reviewed pesticide use patterns and good agricultural practices, data on the chemistry and composition of the pesticides, and methods of analysis for pesticide residues and recommended maximum residue levels. The report also contains information on acceptable daily intakes and acute reference doses of pesticides for humans, and general principles for the evaluation of pesticides. The recommendations of the joint FAO and WHO meeting, including further research and information, are proposed for use by Member governments of the respective agencies and other interested parties. The meeting was held in pursuance of recommendations, made by previous meetings and accepted by the governing bodies of FAO and WHO, that studies should be undertaken jointly by experts to evaluate possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods.

Synopsis Pesticide residues in food 2019 - Evaluations 2019 Part I - Residues by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

The 2019 Extra Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) was held in Gatineau/Ottawa, Canada from 7 to 17 May. The FAO and WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) is an expert ad hoc body administered jointly by FAO and WHO in the purpose of harmonizing the requirement and the risk assessment on the pesticide residues. The JMPR meets annually to evaluate possible hazards to humans arising from the occurrence of pesticide residues in foods. The Evaluation monographs of pesticide residues in food 2019-Part I (e-version only) includes summary of the residue data considered by the 2019 JMPR. The JMPR is the only scientific advisory body to service the Codex and FAO member countries in risk assessment of pesticide residues and in establishment of Codex MRL in food and feed. The JMPR report and evaluations are the unique technical publications in the review of pesticide residue data from around the world. The Report provides the evaluations of the Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues. The extra Meeting evaluated 19 pesticides, including eight new compounds and three compounds that were re-evaluated for toxicity or residues, or both, within the periodic review programme of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR).

Synopsis Pesticide residues in food – 2019 Evaluation: Part II, Toxicological by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

A Joint Meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Panel of experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the World Health Organization (WHO) Core assessment Group on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 17 to 26 September 2019. The FAO Panel Members met in preparatory sessions from 12 to 16 September. The Meeting evaluated 30 pesticides, including eight new compounds and three compounds that were re-evaluated for toxicity or residues, or both, within the periodic review programme of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR). The Meeting established ADIs and ARfDs, estimated maximum residue levels and recommended them for use by CCPR, and estimated supervised trials median residue (STMR) and highest residue (HR) levels as a basis for estimating dietary exposures. The Meeting also estimated the dietary exposures (both acute and long-term) to the pesticides reviewed and, on this basis, performed a dietary risk assessment in relation to the relevant ADI and where necessary the ARfD. Cases in which ADIs or ARfDs may be exceeded, if they occur, are clearly indicated in order to facilitate the decision-making process by CCPR. The Meeting considered a number of general issues addressing procedures for the evaluation and risk assessment of pesticide residues.

Synopsis The impact of pesticide residues on the gut microbiome and human health by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

With a food safety focus, a scientific literature review was conducted to characterize the current understanding about the effects of pesticide residues on the human gut microbiome and potential implications on human health and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The main aspects analysed are (1) effects of individual or combined pesticides on the composition, diversity and function of gut microbiome using in vivo or in vitro models; (2) health implications resulting from the pesticide-microbiome interactions and underlying mechanisms; (3) establishment of causality; and (4) influence of the gut microbiome on the metabolism and bioavailability of pesticides. The research was also scoped to identify current gaps, limitations and needs for the eventual consideration of microbiome-related data in chemical risk assessment. With this work, ESF contributes to the FAO global programme on the impact of food systems on NCDs and obesity, by understanding the potential health implications of gut microbiome-pesticide interactions. The outcomes will provide information which can be used to improve nutritional strategies and food safety policies.

Synopsis Understanding international harmonization of pesticide maximum residue limits with Codex standards by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This publication sets out to explore the issue of harmonization of national pesticides Maximum Residues Limits (MRLs) with Codex pesticide MRLs from different angles, by taking rice as a case study. Part A identifies the level of harmonization in main rice producing and trading countries and explores the possible effects on trade, while Part B investigates the reasons behind differing levels of harmonization. Its broader objective is to offer insights for decision-makers involved in setting of standards and design of food policy at national and international level on the significance of harmonization of pesticide MRLs.
