This study answers questions and addresses issues relating to the motivation for writing these works; its purpose; the role of the author; patrons and audiences; the choice of language; the place of historical writing in the debate over the suitability of Persian for scholarly writing.

This book discusses the origin and growth of Indo-Persian historiography with specific emphasis on India's contribution to the literary heritage of the Persian world. Besides examining 'Awfi's Jawami'ul-Hikayat-wa-Livam'ul-Rivayat as a source of history, the volume also assesses the history of history writing by immigrant and Indian scholars, and is a pioneering attempt insofar as it attempts to study the social background and the religious and political ideals of each of the writers included in this book.

Persian served as one of the primary languages of historical writing over the period of the early modern Islamic empires of the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals. Historians writing under these empires read and cited each other's work, some moving from one empire to another, writing under different rival dynasties at various points in time.
