Synopsis Complex Systems and Dependability by : Wojciech Zamojski

Typical contemporary complex system is a multifaceted amalgamation of technical, information, organization, software and human (users, administrators and management) resources. Complexity of such a system comes not only from its involved technical and organizational structure but mainly from complexity of information processes that must be implemented in the operational environment (data processing, monitoring, management, etc.). In such case traditional methods of reliability analysis focused mainly on technical level are usually insufficient in performance evaluation and more innovative methods of dependability analysis must be applied which are based on multidisciplinary approach to theory, technology and maintenance of systems operating in real (and very often unfriendly) environments. This monograph presents selected new developments in such areas of dependability research as system modelling, tools and methodologies for system analysis, data security, secure system design and specific dependability aspects in specialized technical applications. Many practical cases illustrate the universal rule that complexity and multiplicity of system processes, their concurrency and their reliance on embedded intelligence (human and artificial) significantly impedes construction of strict mathematical models and calls for application of intelligent and soft computing methods.

Synopsis 2005 Workshop on Techniques, Methodologies and Tools for Performance Evaluation of Complex Systems by :

With the increased pervasiveness of computer systems and of wired and wireless communication infrastructures, many innovative applications and services are being developed and becoming an integral part of our daily lives. Therefore, ensuring the performance, reliability, efficiency, and security of these emerging information systems is fundamental if modern society is to work properly. FIRB-Perf 2005 addresses these issues by focusing on new methods, techniques, and tools for performance evaluation. The papers cover topics that encompass all aspects of performance evaluation, from measurement techniques and workload characterization, to formalisms for modeling qualitative and quantitative aspects of complex systems, to automatic generation of predictive and validation models, to solution methods of analytical, numerical, and simulation systems. The proceedings addresses these from a theoretical viewpoint and discusses their applications.

Synopsis Workload Modeling for Computer Systems Performance Evaluation by : Dror G. Feitelson

Reliable performance evaluations require the use of representative workloads. This is no easy task since modern computer systems and their workloads are complex, with many interrelated attributes and complicated structures. Experts often use sophisticated mathematics to analyze and describe workload models, making these models difficult for practitioners to grasp. This book aims to close this gap by emphasizing the intuition and the reasoning behind the definitions and derivations related to the workload models. It provides numerous examples from real production systems, with hundreds of graphs. Using this book, readers will be able to analyze collected workload data and clean it if necessary, derive statistical models that include skewed marginal distributions and correlations, and consider the need for generative models and feedback from the system. The descriptive statistics techniques covered are also useful for other domains.
