Synopsis Peace Diplomacy, Global Justice and International Agency by : Carsten Stahn
As UN Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld shaped many of the fundamental principles and practices of international organisations, such as preventive diplomacy, the ethics of international civil service, impartiality and neutrality. He was also at the heart of the constitutional foundations and principles of the UN. This tribute and critical review of Hammarskjöld's values and legacy examines his approach towards international civil service, agency and value-based leadership, investigates his vision of internationalism and explores his achievements and failures as Secretary-General. It draws on specific conflict situations and strategies such as Suez and the Congo for lessons that can benefit contemporary conflict resolution and modern concepts such as human security and R2P. It also reflects on ways in which actors such as international courts, tribunals and the EU can benefit from Hammarskjöld's principles and experiences in the fields of peace and security and international justice.

Synopsis Open Syllabus on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) by : Adithya Variath
This Open Syllabus on the Responsibility to Protect R2P is developed by the Centre for Research in Air and Space Law at Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai. Over the past several years, R2P has emerged as a critical point of discussion in international discourse about how to best ensure the protection of populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. Despite the importance of this R2P as a global politico-legal doctrine, the concept of R2P is hardly reflected in the curriculum of international law courses in Indian law schools. Understanding the future directions of R2P in a changing world becomes important to study the system and institutions of international law. The study of ethics and politics of R2P also becomes important for researchers and students from the Global South to evaluate third-world ideas and approaches to the responses of global institutions to crises. The purpose of this open syllabus is to help Indian law schools to engage in research, training and teaching about the Responsibility to Protect. The open syllabus seeks to develop an in-depth understanding of the R2P concept and encourages learners to critically examine the ethics, law, and politics of R2P. This project is developed as a framework that can be adopted by law schools as a credit course. The contents of this course can also be incorporated into the existing international law courses in law schools. All chapters are tailored so that the readers get a holistic knowledge of the discourse of R2P.

Synopsis In the Beginning by : Ellen J. Ravndal
This book reviews the formative years of the United Nations (UN) under its first Secretary-General Trygve Lie. This welcome appraisal shows how the foundations for an expanded secretary-general role were laid during this period, and that Lie’s contribution was greater than has later been acknowledged. The interplay of crisis decision-making, institutional constraints and the individuals involved thus built the foundations for the UN organization we know today. Addressing important wider questions of IGO creation, governance and autonomy, this is an incisive account of how the UN moved from paper to practice under Lie.

Synopsis Constitution-Making under UN Auspices by : Vijayashri Sripati
In 1949, United Nations Constitutional Assistance (UNCA) was conceived to promote the Western liberal constitution. This was colonial trusteeship. However, in 1960, as a step towards decolonization, the United Nations General Assembly rejected internationalized constitution-making, and, by extension, UNCA. All colonies acquired the right to draft their own constitutions without any international assistance. Nonetheless, in the same year, UNCA was revived and since then it has helped over 40 developing sovereign states to adopt the Western liberal constitution, for the aims of building peace, preventing conflict, and promoting good governance in these independent states. This book scrutinizes UNCA and its off-shoot, UN/International Territorial Administration (ITA), including their historical origins and revival from 1960 to 2019. Sripati argues that although the United Nations (UN) uses UNCA to help developing sovereign states secure debt relief, it undertakes UNCA to ‘modernize’ them with a view to ‘strengthen’ their supposedly weakened sovereignty. By doing so, the UN is seeking these states’ adoption of a Western liberal-style constitution, thus violating their right to self-determination. The book shows how UNCA sires and guides UN (legislative) assistance in all state-sectors: security, judicial, electoral, commercial, parliamentary, public administration, and criminal. Irrespective of UNCA’s benevolent motivations, such intrusive interventions impose the old forms of domination and perpetuate global inequality.

Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Peace, Security and Development by : Fen Osler Hampson
This Handbook offers a comprehensive examination of the peace, security, and development nexus from a global perspective, and investigates the interfaces of these issues in a context characterised by many new challenges. By bringing together more than 40 leading experts and commentators from across the world, the Handbook maps the various research agendas related to these three themes, taking stock of existing work and debates, while outlining areas for further engagement. In doing so, the chapters may serve as a primer for new researchers while also informing the wider scholarly community about the latest research trends and innovations. The volume is split into three thematic parts: Concepts and approaches New drivers of conflict, insecurity, and developmental challenges Actors, institutions, and processes. For ease of use and organisational consistency, each chapter provides readers with an overview of each research area, a review of the state of the literature, a summary of the major debates, and promising directions for future research. This Handbook will be of much interest to students of peace and conflict studies, development studies, security studies, and International Relations.
