This book is at the interface between Visual Studies and Biblical Studies, and is the only monograph to date on St Paul's visual piety. Heath argues that biblical scholarship has downplayed this-worldly visuality in Christian culture, and that the exegesis of Paul is both a partial cause and a symptom of this 'disciplinary blind-spot'.

Mirrors of the Divine brings into focus how four influential authors of the late ancient world--Tertullian of Carthage, Clement of Alexandria, Gregory of Nyssa, and Augustine of Hippo--employ language of vision and of mirrors in their discursive struggles to construct Christian agency, identity, and epistemology. Early Christian authors described the vision of God through the Pauline verse 1 Corinthians 13:12: "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face." Yet each author interpreted this verse differently, based on a diverse set of assumptions about how they understood seeing and mirrors to function: does vision occur by something leaving or entering the eye? Is one impacted by seeing or by being seen? Do mirrors offer trustworthy knowledge? Spanning the second through fourth centuries CE in both Eastern and Western Christianity, Mirrors of the Divine analyzes these four authors' theological writings on vision and knowledge of God to explore how contradictory theories of sight shaped their cosmologies, theologies, subjectivities, genders, and discursive worlds. As Emily R. Cain demonstrates, how the authors portray eyes reveals how they envisioned one's relationship to the world, while how they portray mirrors reveals how they imagined the unknown. Both have dramatic impacts on how one interprets what it means to see God through a mirror dimly. She shows that arguments about the phenomenon of visual perception are deeply intertwined with broader debates about identity, agency, and epistemology, and uncovers some of the most self-conscious ways that late ancient Christians thought of themselves, their worlds, and their God.

This volume celebrates the ministry and theological contribution of Dr. Ruth Gouldbourne, one of the foremost Baptist and Free Church women ministers and scholars in Britain and Europe. Following studies at St Andrews University, and King’s College London, and ministerial training at Spurgeon’s College, she served at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, the Free Church Bunyan Meeting, Bedford, and had been a Tutor, after which she returned to the local pastorate at Bloomsbury then Grove Lane Baptist Church, Cheadle. Her doctorate explores gender and theology in the writings of the radical reformer, Caspar Schwenckfeld, and she has recently earned her MA in Shakespearean Studies. She has served the Baptist Union on the Baptist Women in Ministry and Training group, the Covenant 2000 Committee, the Working Groups on Membership, and Superintendency, as well as the Baptist Historical Society. Internationally, she chaired the Academic Board of the International Baptist Theological Seminary (IBTSC), and its the Board of Trustees, and her ecumenical commitment has included sitting on the World Council of Churches’ Faith and Order Commission, and serving Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. An Associate Fellow of Spurgeon’s College, she is also Senior Research Fellow of IBTSC Amsterdam, and a Research Fellow of Bristol Baptist College.

The church is unsure of itself in the twenty-first century's media culture. Some Christians denounce digital media while others embrace the latest gadgets and apps as soon as they appear. Many of us are stumbling along amidst the tweets, status updates, podcasts, and blog posts, wondering if we have ventured into a realm beyond the scope of biblical wisdom. Though there is such a thing as "new media," Andrew Byers reminds us that the actual concept of media is ancient, theological, and even biblical. In fact, there is such a thing as the media of God.
