Synopsis Paulie Maki by : Gail Wickstrom

When Pauli Maki is born into a loving family, no one ever anticipates that one day he will become a hopeless alcoholic. Expected to go far in life, he has a healthy, normal childhood in a small town that includes his good friends, Rotten Mugga, Football, Hicks, and Magooch. As Maki gradually progresses into the disease of alcoholism, what begins as a pastime of enjoying a few brews with his chums degenerates into wholesale binges. While he experiences drunken excesses and often-productive periods of sobriety, Maki repeatedly forfeits success for failure. As the cycle seemingly never ends, an engagement to be married is broken, he is fired from promising positions as an aerospace engineer, and becomes very familiar with the inside of a jail cell. Even worse yet, there is a murder. Saddled with guilt, Maki believes he is partially responsible. As his already dark life spirals even further downward, he winds up on skid row. Is there any hope for Maki who has become completely addicted to alcohol? In this novel inspired by true events, an aerospace engineer battling alcoholism spirals downward to rock bottom where he eventually discovers there is always hope.

Synopsis Advanced Semiconductor Devices by : Michael S. Shur

This volume covers five emerging areas of advanced device technology: wide band gap devices, terahertz and millimeter waves, nanometer silicon and silicon-germanium devices, nanoelectronics and ballistic devices, and the characterization of advanced photonic and electronic devices. The papers by leading researchers in high speed and advanced electronic and photonic technology presented many firsts and breakthrough results, as has become a tradition with the Lester Eastman Conference, and will allow readers to obtain up-to-date information about emerging trends and future directions of these technologies. Key papers in each section present snap-shot and mini reviews of state-of-the-art and hot off the press results making the book required reading for engineers, scientists, and students working on advanced and high speed device technology.

Synopsis High-Frequency GaN Electronic Devices by : Patrick Fay

This book brings together recent research by scientists and device engineers working on both aggressively-scaled conventional transistors as well as unconventional high-frequency device concepts in the III-N material system. Device concepts for mm-wave to THz operation based on deeply-scaled HEMTs, as well as distributed device designs based on plasma-wave propagation in polarization-induced 2DEG channels, tunneling, and hot-carrier injection are discussed in detail. In addition, advances in the underlying materials science that enable these demonstrations, and advancements in metrology that permit the accurate characterization and evaluation of these emerging device concepts are also included. Targeting readers looking to push the envelope in GaN-based electronics device research, this book provides a current, comprehensive treatment of device concepts and physical phenomenology suitable for applying GaN and related materials to emerging ultra-high-frequency applications. Offers readers an integrated treatment of the state of the art in both conventional (i.e., HEMT) scaling as well as unconventional device architectures suitable for amplification and signal generation in the mm-wave and THz regime using GaN-based devices, written by authors that are active and widely-known experts in the field; Discusses both conventional scaled HEMTs (into the deep mm-wave) as well as unconventional approaches to address the mm-wave and THz regimes; Provides “vertically integrated” coverage, including materials science that enables these recent advances, as well as device physics & design, and metrology techniques; Includes fundamental physics, as well as numerical simulations and experimental realizations.

Scientific realism is at the core of the contemporary philosophical debate on science. This book analyzes new versions of scientific realism. It makes explicit the advantages of scientific realism over alternatives and antagonists, contributes to deciding which of the new approaches better meets the descriptive and the prescriptive criteria, and expands the philosophico-methodological field to take in new topics and disciplines.
