Synopsis Pathology of Plant Poisonings in Animals by : Y. Damodar Singh
Livestock poisoning by plants is one of the serious causes of economic loss to the livestock industry. Veterinarians and animal owners are frequently confronted with the task of determining whether or not a plant is responsible for poisoning of animals. Similarly the presence of plants other than grasses in a pasture is always a concern to livestock owners. Ingestion of many plants produces non-specific clinical signs that must be differentiated from other disease conditions. In addition, death due to toxic plant ingestion often does not result in characteristic post-mortem lesions. Unfortunately, relatively few laboratory tests are available to detect plant toxins in either ante-mortem or post-mortem samples. Making a definitive diagnosis of plant poisoning is difficult. It is important to be familiar with the poisonous plants growing in the specific area and the conditions under which animals may be poisoned. Hence, the pathology of plant poisonings in animals is necessary to be studied for proper management, treatment, prevention and control of plant poisoning cases.

Synopsis Plant Poisonings and Mycotoxicoses of Livestock in Southern Africa by : T. S. Kellerman
The book is a new edition of the definitive work intended as a standard textbook for veterinary students and practitioners, livestock breeders and research workers. About 600 indigenous poisonous plants are known to occur in southern Africa. The book makes available the vast store of knowledge on plant and fungal poisonings accumulated over 65 years at the South African Veterinary Institution at Onderstepoort. Each case of poisoning is described and depicted in colour. Distribution charts are given and detailed information on the toxicology, chemistry, symptomatology and pathology of each condition.

Synopsis Effects of Poisonous Plants on Livestock by : Richard F. Keeler
Effects of Poisonous Plants on Livestock documents the proceedings of a U.S.-Australian symposium on the effects of poisonous plants on domestic livestock. The symposium was held at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, on 19-24 June 1977. The volume is organized into eight parts. Part I discusses poisonous plant problems in the United States and Australia. Part II contains papers on general topics such as inorganic toxicants and poisonous plants; the hazard of plant toxicities to the human population; and selenium in plants as a cause of livestock poisoning. Part III examines the effects of simple phytotoxins such as selenium and oxalate on livestock. Part IV focuses on the effects of plant hepatotoxins, including pyrrolizidine alkaloids, Artemisia nova, and Tetradymia spp. Part V deals with plant cardio/pulmonary toxins such as Myoporum spp. and Pimelea spp. Part VI tales up plant neurotoxins while Part VII discusses plant teratogens and toxins affecting reproduction. Part VII presents studies on other toxic substances. It includes studies on oak poisoning and pine needle abortion in cattle.

Synopsis Poisoning By Plants, Mycotoxins, and Related Toxins by : Franklin Riet-Correa
This comprehensive collection of up-to-the-minute research in the field of poisonous plants investigates the effects of toxins on animals and humans. It covers the effects of poisonous plants on the liver, the reproductive system, and the nervous system, as well as exploring the field of herbal medicine. In a specialized section devoted to control measures, the book highlights techniques such as vaccination and taste aversion, providing the reader with important information on safeguarding against disaster. This volume is an essential reference for veterinarians, researchers, toxicologists and.

Synopsis Poisonous Plants and Related Toxins by : Thomas Acamovic
This book presents refereed and edited papers from the 6th International Symposium on Poisonous Plants, held in Scotland in August 2001. It covers a range of topics from plant biochemistry to toxic effects in animals (particularly grazing farmed animals) and humans. The contents include the evolution of antinutrients and toxins in plants, biomedical applications of toxins in plants, isolation, identification and effects of plant and fungal toxins and the effect of plant toxins on aversion to plants in animal diets.

Synopsis Handbook of Toxic Plants of North America by : George E. Burrows
This user-friendly handbook on plants poisonous to animals has been written and organized to serve the needs of veterinarians, livestock owners, and students. Authors Burrows and Tyrl combine the insights of a veterinary toxicologist with that of a botanist and taxonomist to provide a quick reference for individuals who deal daily with livestock or companion animals in natural settings where plant poisoning may occur. The authors have previously been acclaimed for providing easy accessibility to information in their comprehensive 2001 reference work Toxic Plants of North America that was quickly established as the gold-standard book for those requiring information on plants poisonous to animals and humans on the North American continent. Now, to satisfy the needs of veterinary clinicians, ranchers, farmers, animal scientists, toxicologists, and other diagnosticians, Burrows and Tyrl have organized this handbook by body system affected, then subdivided by clinical manifestations. Each chapter begins with a table of the plants affecting a given system, e.g., plants affecting the liver and causing necrosis. The table lists those plants and comments briefly on the salient signs. It also includes plants that would produce the same effect but will be detailed in other chapters. For each plant, signs, pathology, treatment, and problems and causes are discussed followed by general information on the plant, keys to identification of that plant, illustrations, and location maps.

Synopsis Toxic Plants and Other Natural Toxicants by : Tam Garland
Toxic plants and other natural toxicants have a variety of roles in the fields of human health, medical research and the production of safe food and also represent an economic problem in terms of animal health and crop production. Estimates of economic impact on livestock have ranged in the millions of dollars in countries such as Australia and the United States. This book brings together applied and fundamental research from botanists, chemists, biochemists, agricultural scientists, veterinarians and physicians and advice from regulatory bodies. It consists of more than 100 edited papers from the Fifth International Symposium on Poisonous Plants, held in Texas in May 1997. All aspects of poisonous plants, mycotoxicoses and herbal intoxications are covered. Their adverse effects are described, such as fatalities, reduced or failed reproduction, fetotoxicity, spontaneous abortions, deformities, reduced productivity and organ-specific toxicity. Methods of detection, isolation and identification of the chemical compounds responsible are included. The biochemistry of the plant-associated toxins and elucidation of their mechanism of action is investigated, including the protocols for management or eradication, immunization programs, behaviour modification, withholding periods for metabolic detoxification, regulatory advice concerning human usage of natural products and advice concerning toxin-residue in agricultural produce. The development of non-toxic strains of plants for use as fodder is also discussed. This book is essential reading for toxicologists concerned with animal and human health, food industry regulators and plant scientists.
