This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third European Conference on the Parallel Virtual Machine, EuroPVM '96, the 1996 European PVM users' group meeting, held in Munich, Germany, in October 1996. The parallel virtual machine, PVM, was developed at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in cooperation with Emory University and Carnegie Mellon University to support distributed computing. This volume comprises 51 revised full contributions devoted to PVM. Although the last decade has witnessed significant advances in control theory for finite and infinite dimensional systems, the stability and control of time-delay systems have not been fully investigated. Many problems exist in this field that are still unresolved, and there is a tendency for the numerical methods available either to be too general or too specific to be applied accurately across a range of problems. This monograph brings together the latest trends and new results in this field, with the aim of presenting methods covering a large range of techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on methods that can be directly applied to specific problems. The resulting book is one that will be of value to both researchers and practitioners.

Massively parallel processing is currently the most promising answer to the quest for increased computer performance. This has resulted in the development of new programming languages and programming environments and has stimulated the design and production of massively parallel supercomputers. The efficiency of concurrent computation and input/output essentially depends on the proper utilization of specific architectural features of the underlying hardware. This book focuses on development of runtime systems supporting execution of parallel code and on supercompilers automatically parallelizing code written in a sequential language. Fortran has been chosen for the presentation of the material because of its dominant role in high-performance programming for scientific and engineering applications.

Multiscale Phenomena play an essential role in the dynamics of many complex systems. Owing to their inherent nonlinearity and the involvement of many different length scales, these systems are often only be studied through numerical simulations. The book focused on common structures and problems in fluid dynamics, particle physics and macromolecule simulations. An important aspect of the discussions was the development of simulation techniques for massively parallel computers and recent advances in the construction of special purpose parallel computers.
