Synopsis Papers and Addresses (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Craik
Excerpt from Papers and Addresses This book of addresses has been published to perpetuate the memory of one who, during his whole medical life, was connected with the Medical Faculty of McGill University, and who had much to do with the shaping of its destinies. His interest in Medical Education was always of the greatest, and his whole heart was in the work of increasing the efficiency of the Faculty with which he was connected, and keeping it well up in the forefront of scientific progressive schools of medicine. His advocacy of any new method of teaching or new department to be added to the curriculum was always vigorous and candid, provided he was assured that it was in the interest of the School. These addresses will be valuable to all graduates who wish to know the history and progress of their Alma Mater, for they contain a narrative of the advances made during the most progressive period of the Faculty, and also the difficulties and trials which had to be encountered in order to arrive at such brilliant results. As Dean, Dr. Craik was the moving spirit in the Faculty from 1889 to 1902. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Library and Society by : Arthur E. Bostwick
Excerpt from The Library and Society: Reprints of Papers and Addresses It may be desirable to repeat here the warning that the word classics in the title of this series is to be understood as meaning early and standard expressions of ideas that have later developed into prominence. The papers and addresses in this volume have been chosen especially with this in view, and as they emphasize social relations an effort has been made to include expressions from men of eminence whose names would not probably occur 'to the student of library economy as having ex pressed an opinion about the work of libraries or as having influenced it in any permanent way. I desire to acknowledge the kindly assistance ren dered in the selection and grouping of the articles by Mrs. Gertrude Gilbert Drury, chief instructor in the St. Louis Library School. It has been most valuable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Addresses, State Papers and Letters (Classic Reprint) by : Grover Cleveland
Excerpt from Addresses, State Papers and Letters It has been said, Light sorrows speak, great grief is dumb, and the application of this would enforce my silence on this occasion. But I cannot go so far, nor let the hour pass without adding a tribute of respect and love for my de parted friend. He was my friend in the most sacred and complete sense of the term. I have walked with him, talked with him, ate with him, and slept with him - was he not my friend? I must not, dare not, recall the memories of our long and loving friendship. And let not my brethren think it amiss if I force back the thoughts which come crowding to my mind. I shall speak coldly of my friend; but the most sacred tribute of a sad heart, believe me, is unspoken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Addresses, Lectures and Other Papers (Classic Reprint) by : James Clarke Welling
Excerpt from Addresses, Lectures and Other Papers I have very warmly cherished recollections of Dr. Welling. We lived side by side during the time of his residence in Princeton, and I very soon began to know the charm and value of a near personal friendship with one possessed of a most sincere and genial nature, and of emi nent and varied qualifications for his work and influence in the professorship which he so ably filled. Synopsis Addresses and Papers (Classic Reprint) by : Andrew Sloan Draper
Excerpt from Addresses and Papers There are still other people, and many of them, who do not take the trouble to think about the matter, who care for little which does not promise advantage to themselves, and who lack the taste or the energy for political activity. They keep quiet, refrain from stirring opposition, and take advantage of any wind from any quarter. When they want something, they want it very badly. Then they can not understand why every interest should not turn aside for theirs. Seeking something, they think that the laws and rules are made only to fool the uninitiated, and when disappointed they are very skeptical about square and honest men in public life. Passing for most excellent people, professing rectitude, and possessing it so long as no selfish interest is in the way, they are singularly deaf to all reason and blind to all principle when a real test comes and conscience toys with temptation. Synopsis Addresses and Other Papers (Classic Reprint) by : William W. Keen
Excerpt from Addresses and Other Papers Two centuries earlier still, Democritus and Hippocrates had taken the first tentative steps, in the examination of the bodies of the inferior animals, but they ventured no further than this. Synopsis Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by : George Rolleston
Excerpt from Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 2 Having recently had occasion to study the habits and anatomy of the English Marten Cats, Mustela martes and Mustela foina, and having looked into the history of these animals and of certain other carnivora which have borne the same name as they in ancient and modern times, I have come to think that the latter of the two creatures specified namely, the white-breasted marten, Mustela foina, was the animal which the ancient Greeks and Romans employed for the same domestic purposes for which we employ the Felis domesticus; whilst this latter animal has been employed as at present in Western Europe for probably a considerably longer period than the last thousand years. Other writers to whom I have referred, and amongst them notably Dureau de la Malle, have adopted the former of these conclusions; but upon premises more or less inadequate or incorrect or both. I am well assured that this question has for the philosophic naturalist much more than a merely archaeological interest, for in the resolving of it we may have light cast upon the working of the principle which Mr. Darwin has shown to be more potent than any other in regulating the distribution of species, and which Van Beneden, with the well-known physiological aphorisms of Wolff and Treviranus before his eyes, has formulated in the words, 'les etres qui composent une Faune sont solidaires entre eux comma les organes d'un etre vivant.'
