Synopsis Paper Modelling (Yesterday's Classics) by : Mildred Swannell

An introduction to a handicraft for young children that strengthens skills of paper folding, paper cutting and pasting, and ruler drawing while constructing models from paper. Plans for 44 models are included in the book, some simpler and others more complex. The first ten models start with a square piece of paper to form simple objects such as a box and a basket, or more complex ones such as a cart or a barn. Next come 23 models that begin as oblongs, and a final 11 from various irregular shapes. Detailed instructions accompany the plans. Rather than a series of projects to be worked through from beginning to end, consider starting with projects with a few simple pieces and few instructions, and then, as skills increase, choosing projects that match your skill level and catch your fancy. This edition differs from the original in having each model on its own page or pagespread, with instructions for each component placed as closely as possible to its graphic representation. The dimensions on the plans match the dimensions in the instructions and are sized to be easily readable. The components in each plan are represented as large as possible on the page, while still in proportion to each other, so the dimensions on the plans will seldom match the measurements on your ruler.

Synopsis Blackboard Drawing (Yesterday's Classics) by : Mildred Swannell

A handy guide to introducing chalk drawing to children so they develop drawing skills hand In hand with cultivating their powers of observation. Beginning with circles, children move on to patterns that can be made within a circle and then drawing of simple objects based on a circle. Ovals are introduced next, and form the basis of instruction on how to draw fish, leaves, and birds. Flowers, insects, and larger animals are then each taken up in turn. The book concludes with ways chalk drawings can be used to excite interest in arithmetic, geography, and history lessons. The 27 different black and white plates in this book are meant both to instruct and to inspire. For ease of use, in this edition the text and the plates they reference are placed on facing pages, allowing the reader to refer to both at the same time (rather than having all the plates at the end, as in the original edition). Note: Several plates are included in more than one page spread when the corresponding text spans multiple pages.

Synopsis Brush Drawing as Applied to Natural Forms and Common Objects (Yesterday's Classics) by : May Mallam

Children may find the method of learning to draw with a brush instead of a pencil easy to do. After mastering use of the brush for drawing, brushwork teaches expression by means of light and shade; bold, simple work, general effect rather than detail; suggestive rather than exact.

Synopsis Statistical Inference as Severe Testing by : Deborah G. Mayo

Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.
