Paper Chromatography and Electrophoresis, Volume I: Electrophoresis in Stabilizing Media covers the general features of electrophoresis in stabilizing media. The book includes a consideration of the factors which determine the rate of movement of the compounds in an electrical field, the factors which must be controlled in order to obtain successful results, as well as the general arrangement and types of equipment used. The text also provides a description of methods for the separation of specific classes of compounds (amines, amino acids, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, derivatives, and related compounds, carbohydrates, and organic acids and derivatives) normally encountered by chemists. Inorganic chemists, organic chemists, clinical chemists, and biochemists will find the book invaluable.

Fundamentals of Biochemical Pharmacology explains the molecular aspects of drugs and the changes in bio-chemical systems. The cellular movements that result from such changes are also evaluated. Biochemical lesion is extensively defined in the book. A discussion on electromagnetic radiation is also provided. A chapter of the book is devoted to the principles of electronic and nuclear magnetic resonance. The principles and applications of mass spectrometry and combined gas chromatography are then discussed. The scientific advances made with the use of immunological methods are the focus of a section of the book. Another section provides an introduction to the kinetic properties of reactions made by enzymes. The process called homogenization is clearly explained along with a discussion on the use of electron microscopy. Autoradiography shows the distribution of compounds at the subcellular level. The theoretical background of molecular spectroscopy is presented completely. The book is intended for chemists, biochemists, physicists, micro-biologists, zoologists, and botanists .

As editor I want especially to thank Dr. Ernst Freese for helpful co operation in preparing these volumes, and to express my appreclatlOn to Drs. Kurt Hirschhorn and Marvin Legator, the other members of the editorial board. Alexander Hollaender January 1971 Preface The purpose of these volumes is to encourage the development and ap plication of testing and monitoring procedures to avert significant human exposure to mutagenic agents. The need for protection against exposure to possibly mutagenic chemicals is only now coming to be generally realized. The recently issued Report of the Secretary's Commission on Pesticides and Their Possible Effects on Health (the Mrak Report-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, December 1969) has made an important start. Its Panel on Mutagenicity recommends that all currently used pesticides be tested for mutagenicity in several recently developed and relatively simple systems. Whether recommendations such as these are actually put into effect will depend on convincing government, industry, and the public that the problem is important, that the proposed tests would be effective, and that they can be conducted at a cost that is not prohibitive. Why is it important to screen environmental agents for mutagenic activity? To those who will read this book, the answer is self-evident. The sine qua non of all that we value and all that we are is our genetic heritage.

Here in one source is a wide variety of practical, everydayinformation often required by chemists but seldom found together,if at all, in the standard handbooks, data collections, manuals, and other usual sources. Discussing physical, chemical, andmechanical properties of substances and systems, the authors answersuch questions as: * How do I test for and destroy peroxides in different solventsand what is the best way to purify such solvents? * What are the structure, physical properties, and recentreferences to the use of common-name solvents and solvent aids suchas the "Skellysolves," "Cellosolves," "Crownanes," and"Glymes"? * What is the utility of a particular molecular sieve, orpermeation gel, or epoxy cement, or liquid crystal, and where do Ibuy them and find references to their application? The book is divided into nine chapters and covers properties ofatoms and molecules, spectroscopy, photochemistry, chromatography, kinetics and thermodynamics, various experimental techniques, andmathematical and numerical information, including the definitions, values, and usage rules of the newly adopted International Systemof Units (SI Units). A section on statistical treatment of datawhich provides an actual least-squares computer program is alsoincluded. In the spectroscopy chapter, very extensive andup-to-date collections of spectral correlation data are presentedfor ir, uv-vis, optical rotation, nmr, and mass spectra, along withdata on esr and nqr spectroscopy. Also included is a variety ofhard-to-classify but frequently sought information, such as namesand addresses of microanalysis companies and chemistry publishers, descriptions and commercial sources of atomic and molecular models, and safety data for hazardous chemicals. More than 500 keyreferences are also included, most of which are recent. There areimportant hints and definitions associated with the art as well asthe state of the art for the appropriate subjects. Also foundthroughout the book are about 250 suppliers and directions forobtaining special booklets or other material. Containing a wealth of useful information, The Chemist'sCompanion will be an indispensable guide for students andprofessional chemists in nearly all the chemical disciplines. Inaddition, it will provide for the teacher and student an unusualadjunct for use in a broad cross-section of chemistry courses.
