Synopsis Supporting Early Mathematical Development by : Caroline McGrath

Supporting Early Mathematical Development is an essential text for current Early Years practitioners and students, offering an excellent blend of theory and practice that will enable you to provide successful mathematical education for children from birth to eight years old. Charting the delivery of mathematical development in Playgroups, Children's Centres, Nurseries and Primary Schools, it forges links between current practice and fundamental Early Years principles and makes suggestions for creating effective pedagogies in maths teaching. Promoting mathematical development through play-based learning, this book presents: a wealth of practical multi-sensory teaching strategies instructional methodologies activity ideas incorporating play, books, songs, cookery and the outdoors examples of children's work advice on translating theory into practice questions for reflective practice. Throughout the book, Caroline McGrath breaks down the complexity of teaching and learning mathematics into simple steps and guides readers through possible gaps in their knowledge, bringing fresh enthusiasm to teaching mathematics. This is an invaluable resource for practitioners and trainee teachers wishing to strengthen their mathematical teaching and professional practice, or for students on a wide range of Early Years courses.

Synopsis Second International Handbook of Mathematics Education by : Alan Bishop

ALAN 1. BISHOP The first International Handbook on Mathematics Education was published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in 1996. However, most of the writing for that handbook was done in 1995 and generally reflected the main research and development foci prior to 1994. There were four sections, 36 chapters, and some 150 people contributed to the final volume either as author, reviewer, editor, or critical friend. The task was a monumental one, attempting to cover the major research and practice developments in the international field of mathematics education as it appeared to the contributors in 1995. Inevitably there were certain omissions, some developments were only starting to emerge, and some literatures were only sketchy and speculative. However that Handbook has had to be reprinted three times, so it clearly fulfilled a need and I personally hope that it lived up to what I wrote in its Introduction: The Handbook thus attempts not merely to present a description of the international 'state-of-the-field', but also to offer synthetic and reflective overviews on the different directions being taken by the field, on the gaps existing in our present knowledge, on the current problems being faced, and on the future possibilities for development. (Bishop et aI. , 1996) Since that time there has been even more activity in our field, and now seems a good time to take stock again, to reflect on what has happened since 1995, and to create a second Handbook with the same overall goals.

Synopsis Children's Errors in Mathematics by : Alice Hansen

This practical guide to children's common errors and misconceptions in mathematics is ideal for primary trainees, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties encountered in mathematical development. This Second Edition has been fully revised and all links to the EYFS and the Revised Primary Framework have been updated. New research and literature are included, additional errors are considered, and using and applying mathematics is fully embedded throughout. Individual misconceptions are dealt with and in each case a description and explanation of the error is provided. The teacher's role in understanding and addressing common misconceptions is also covered.

Synopsis Primary Mathematics by : Penelope Baker

Primary Mathematics: Integrating Theory with Practice is a comprehensive introduction to teaching mathematics in Australian primary schools. Closely aligned with the Australian Curriculum, it provides a thorough understanding of measurement, geometry, patterns and algebra, data and statistics, and chance and probability. The fourth edition provides support for educators in key aspects of teaching: planning, assessment, digital technologies, diversity in the classroom and integrating mathematics content with other learning areas. It also features a new chapter on the role of education support in the mathematics classroom. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised and is complemented by classroom snapshots demonstrating practical application of theories, activities to further understanding and reflection questions to guide learning. New in this edition are 'Concepts to consider', which provide a guided explanation and further discussion of key concepts to support pre- and in-service teachers' learning and teaching of the fundamentals of mathematics.

Synopsis Low Attainers in Primary Mathematics by : Jenny Houssart

In this fascinating book, Jenny Houssart draws on close observations with children in lower mathematics sets in primary schools to investigate why some children opt out of mathematics at an early age. After introducing us to the children, she addresses a particular type of mathematical task in each chapter, including: mental work practical work written work calculators and computers assessment tasks. Through the use of stories and quotes, the author shows how the children respond to specific tasks and presents evidence of a range of difficulties that emerge as the children are working. Each chapter ends with discussions and implications for classroom practice. Low Attainers in Primary Mathematics will be a useful resource for primary teachers, student teachers, SENCOs and teaching assistants who will all recognise these children from their own classrooms and draw insights from this highly readable book.
