Synopsis First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature by : F. W. J. Schelling

Appearing here in English for the first time, this is F. W. J. Schelling's vital document of the attempts of German Idealism and Romanticism to recover a deeper relationship between humanity and nature and to overcome the separation between mind and matter induced by the modern reductivist program. Written in 1799 and building upon his earlier work, First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature provides the most inclusive exposition of Schelling's philosophy of the natural world. He presents a startlingly contemporary model of an expanding and contracting universe; a unified theory of electricity, gravity magnetism, and chemical forces; and, perhaps most importantly, a conception of nature as a living and organic whole.

Synopsis Post-Continental Philosophy by : John Mullarkey

Post-Continental Philosophy outlines the shift in Continental thought over the last 20 years through the work of four central figures: Gilles Deleuze, Alain Badiou, Michel Henry, and François Laruelle. Though they follow seemingly different methodologies and agendas, each insists on the need for a return to the category of immanence if philosophy is to have any future at all. Rejecting both the German phenomenological tradition of transcendence (of the Ego, Being, Consciousness, Alterity, or Flesh), as well as the French Structuralist valorisation of Language, they instead take the immanent categories of biology (Deleuze), mathematics (Badiou), affectivity (Henry), and axiomatic science (Laruelle) as focal points for a renewal of thought. Consequently, Continental philosophy is taken in a new direction that engages science and nature with a refreshingly critical and non-reductive approach to life, set-theory, embodiment, and knowledge. However, each of these new philosophies of immanence still regards what the other is doing as transcendent representation, raising the question of what this return to immanence really means. John Mullarkey's analysis provides a startling answer. By teasing out their internal differences, he discovers that the only thing that can be said of immanence without falling back into transcendent representation seems not to be a saying at all but a 'showing', a depiction through lines. Because each of these philosophies also places a special value on the diagram, the common ground of immanence is that occupied by the philosophical diagram rather than the word. The heavily illustrated final chapter of the book literally outlines how a mode of philosophical discourse might proceed when using diagrams to think immanence.

Synopsis Li Da And Marxist Philosophy In China by : Nick Knight

"Scholars of Marxism will be in Nick Knight's debt for this pioneering study of one of the most important figures in the development of Marxism in China. Knight makes an important case about the relationship of Chinese Marxist thought to Marxist thought in general (with particular attention to Soviet Marxism). The book makes available to readers not just important texts of Chinese Marxism, but a whole series of texts of Marxism that were crucial to the political discourse of the thirties. Knight displays impressive erudition and command of these texts. In spite of the strong case he makes for his thesis, he retains throughout an admirable critical self-awareness that enhances the plausibility of his argument." —Arif DirlikDuke University

Synopsis Sextus Empiricus: Outlines of Scepticism by : Sextus Empiricus

Outlines of Scepticism, by the Greek philosopher Sextus Empiricus, is a work of major importance for the history of Greek philosophy. It is the fullest extant account of ancient scepticism, and it is also one of our most copious sources of information about the other Hellenistic philosophies. Its first part contains an elaborate exposition of the Pyrrhonian variety of scepticism; its second and third parts are critical and destructive, arguing against 'dogmatism' in logic, epistemology, science and ethics - an approach that revolutionized the study of philosophy when Sextus' works were rediscovered and published in the sixteenth century. This volume presents the accurate and readable translation which was first published in 1994, together with a substantial new historical and philosophical introduction by Jonathan Barnes.

Synopsis A New Philosophy Henri Bergson by : Edouard Le Roy

Edouard Le Roy, a notable French philosopher and mathematician, by "A New Philosophy" as a philosophical book. This work, published in the early twentieth century, made an important addition to the area of philosophy. Le Roy's work might be described as a demand for a philosophical paradigm change. He argues for the significance of reconciling science and philosophy, with the goal of bridging the gap between these two historically different fields. In "A New Philosophy," he presents a holistic approach to human life that considers both empirical and metaphysical dimensions. The investigation of the link between science, religion, and philosophy is one of the book's main themes. According to Le Roy, these realms of human cognition should not be viewed as antagonistic, but rather as complimentary components of a full worldview. Le Roy's writing is distinguished by clarity and precision, making complicated philosophical themes understandable to a wider audience. He highlights the need of accepting ambiguity and humility in the search of knowledge, arguing for a philosophy that is open to new scientific discoveries. In conclusion, Edouard Le Roy's "A New Philosophy" is a thought-provoking work that questions traditional boundaries in philosophy and strives to construct a harmonic synthesis between science and metaphysics.
