Synopsis Orangeburg Revisited by : Dr. Gene Atkinson

Orangeburg, South Carolina, is home to an abundant history, shown in this second volume through over 225 rare images of times gone by. The epitome of the small town, Orangeburg is where friends would gather at the famous Bluebird Theatre or the old soda fountains at a turn-of-the-century drugstore. Residents marveled when the Orangeburg Hotel was constructed in 1909; at the time it was the second tallest structure in all of South Carolina. Marchant Music Co., whose showroom is featured in this volume, recalls the days when everyone gathered around the piano in the parlor. Beauty queens from the old Fall Festival, which preceded the formation of the Orangeburg County Fair, grace the pages of this collection. Even the first motor-powered fire truck makes an appearance, as do the stalwart men who comprised the old volunteer fire departments. Also notable in this volume is the rarely mentioned George H. Cornelson, who had more impact on the city than any other person over the last 130 years.

Synopsis Orangeburg, SC by : Gene Atkinson

Located along the north fork of South Carolina's Edisto River, Orangeburg enjoys an extended, rich heritage dating back to the 1730s when it was created as one of the original inland townships. The first settlers were mostly German and Swiss immigrants who found the area to be the paragon of locales, valuable in fertile soil and abundant wildlife surrounding the river. The city of today has been gently shaped by its landscape and natural life, which called people and industries to experience the benefits of such land. This volume celebrates Orangeburg's history by offering readers a rare find of more than 200 photographs from days gone by, taking them on an adventure through the town's coming of age, from the early days of photography to the 1950s. These images reveal the ways of life long past by showcasing well-known town entities such as the Courthouse Square and the Edisto Memorial Gardens, local businesses like the Orangeburg Hotel, and beloved residents, some of whom were public figures and others better remembered by their families and friends. From early-century churches to the evolution of the county fair, readers will find themselves enthralled by the history that Orangeburg possesses.

Synopsis Michelle Obama by : Peter Slevin

This is the inspiring story of a modern American icon, the first comprehensive account of the life and times of Michelle Obama. With disciplined reporting and a storyteller’s eye for revealing detail, Peter Slevin follows Michelle to the White House from her working-class childhood on Chicago’s largely segregated South Side. He illuminates her tribulations at Princeton University and Harvard Law School during the racially charged 1980s and the dilemmas she faced in Chicago while building a high-powered career, raising a family, and helping a young community organizer named Barack Obama become president of the United States. From the lessons she learned in Chicago to the messages she shares as one of the most recognizable women in the world, the story of this First Lady is the story of America. Michelle Obama: A Life is a fresh and compelling view of a woman of unique achievement and purpose.

Synopsis A New Kind of Youth by : Jon N. Hale

The story of activist youth in America is usually framed around the Vietnam War, the counterculture, and college campuses, focusing primarily on college students in the 1960s and 1970s. But a remarkably effective tradition of Black high school student activism in the civil rights era has gone understudied. In 1951, students at R. R. Moton High School in rural Virginia led a student walkout and contacted the law firm of Hill, Martin, and Robinson in Richmond, Virginia, to file one of the five pivotal court cases that comprised the Brown v. Board of Education decision. In 1960, twenty-four Burke High School students in Charleston, South Carolina, organized the first direct action, nonviolent protest in the city at the downtown S. H. Kress department store. Months later in the small town of McComb, Mississippi, an entire high school walked out in protest of the conviction of a student who sat-in on a local Woolworth lunch counter in 1961, guiding the agenda for the historic Freedom Summer campaign of 1964. A New Kind of Youth brings high school activism into greater focus, illustrating how Black youth supported liberatory social and political movements and inspired their elders across the South.

Synopsis Functional Genomics and Proteomics in the Clinical Neurosciences by : Scott E. Hemby

The purpose of this work is to familiarize neuroscientists with the available tools for proteome research and their relative abilities and limitations. To know the identities of the thousands of different proteins in a cell, and the modifications to these proteins, along with how the amounts of both of these change in different conditions would revolutionize biology and medicine. While important strides are being made towards achieving the goal of global mRNA analysis, mRNA is not the functional endpoint of gene expression and mRNA expression may not directly equate with protein expression. There are many potential applications for proteomics in neuroscience: determination of the neuro-proteome, comparative protein expression profiling, post-translational protein modification profiling and mapping protein-protein interactions, to name but a few. Functional Genomics and Proteomics in Clinical Neuroscience will comment on all of these applications, but with an emphasis on protein expression profiling. This book combines the basic methodology of genomics and proteomics with the current applications of such technologies in understanding psychiatric illnesses.* Introduction of basic methodologies in genomics and proteomics and their integration in psychiatry* Development of the text in sections related to methods, application and future directions of these rapidly advancing technologies* Use of actual data to illustrate many principles of functional genomics and proteomics. * Introduction to bioinformatics and database management techniques
