Synopsis One Case - Two Systems: A Comparative View of American and German Criminal Justice Systems by : Floyd Feeney

Using California as the model for the adversarial system and Germany as the model for the inquisitorial system, this innovative work seeks to add a new dimension to the comparative study of criminal justice. The basic idea is contained in the title, One Case--Two Systems. Containing the first ever side-by-side portrayals of full American and German trials, the book views a single case through two separate lenses--one American, one German. Returning home unexpectedly from a vacation in the country, an elderly man interrupts a night time burglary in his own house and is attacked as the burglar tries to escape. By portraying an ordinary crime--a burglary that turns into a robbery--rather than a dramatic, high-profile murder, the book provides a detailed, working picture of the two systems and the contrasts between them. Allowing the reader to observe and compare the formal steps that cases go through in the two systems, it brings the work of the police, the prosecution, the defense, and the courts to life - by giving thoughts and reasons as well as actions. Even the most critical documents are included. Designed to illustrate the most important differences between the two systems, the country chapters first portray the California investigation and prosecution and then take the same case through the German system. Often seeing eye-to-eye but sometimes diverging sharply, the two sets of comments focus on the critical issues depicted in the country chapters--seeking to explain the similarities, differences, and peculiarities of the two systems. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

Synopsis One Case-- Two Systems by : Floyd Feeney

Building on the emerging principle that no organism as complex as a criminal justice system can be well understood solely through an analysis of one or two features, the book introduces the unique perspective of a new, more holistic, case-oriented method of comparison. Using California as the model for the adversarial system and Germany as the model for the inquisitorial system, it seeks to add a new dimension to the comparative study of criminal justice. The basic idea is contained in the title, 'One Case-Two Systems'. Containing the first ever side-by-side portrayals of full American and German trials, the book views a single case through two separate lenses -- one American, one German. Returning home unexpectedly from a vacation in the country, an elderly man interrupts a night time burglary in his own house and is attacked as the burglar tries to escape. By portraying an ordinary crime -- a burglary that turns into a robbery -- rather than a dramatic, high-profile murder, the book provides a detailed, working picture of the two systems and the contrasts between them. Allowing the reader to observe and compare the formal steps that cases go through in the two systems, it brings the work of the police, the prosecution, the defense, and the courts to life -- by giving thoughts and reasons as well as actions. Even the most critical documents are included. Designed to illustrate the most important differences between the two systems, the country chapters first portray the California investigation and prosecution and then take the same case through the German system. Investigation, arrest, detention, charging, lawyer discussions and negotiations, the defense attorney-defendant relationship, court hearings, the witnesses' testimony, and the court's rulings -- all are included. Comparative comments follow -- first from a German and then from an American point of view. Often seeing eye-to-eye but sometimes diverging sharply, the two sets of comments focus on the critical issues depicted in the country chapters -- seeking to explain the similarities, differences, and peculiarities of the two systems.

Synopsis The Acquisition of the German Case System by Foreign Language Learners by : Kristof Baten

This is the first book on the acquisition of the German case system by foreign language learners. It explores how learners in their interlanguage progress from the total absence to the presence of a case system. This development is characterized by an evolvement from marking the argument’s position to marking the argument’s actual function. Theoretically couched within Processability Theory, the book deals with the feature unification and the mapping processes involved in case marking, and critically examines previous findings on German case acquisition. Empirically, the book consists of longitudinal data of 11 foreign language learners of German, which was collected over a period of 2 years. This book will be useful to anyone interested in the acquisition of German and in the acquisition of case systems in general.

Synopsis Applications and Innovations in Expert Systems VI by : Robert W. Milne

R. MILNE Intelligent Applications Ltd The papers in this volume are the Application Papers presented at ES98, the Eighteenth International Conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems. This year has been yet another "applications" success for the conference with this volume containing seventeen papers describing either deployed applications or emerging applications. All these documented case studies provide clear evidence of the success of AI technology in solving real business problems. Six of these papers were nominated for the Best Application Award during the review process. These nominations were then reviewed by the members of the Programme Committee to select the winning paper. The papers in the volume were subject to refereeing by at least two referees. All papers which were controversial for some reason were discussed in depth by the Application Programme Committee. Ten referees from the industrial and commercial sector and nine referees from the academic sector assisted me in reviewing the papers. The review form asked the referee to score the papers according to a number of dimensions, to rate it overall, and to offer critical comments to me, and to the authors. It also asks the referee to score their expertise in the area of each paper they review. Only reviews from 'expert' referees are used.

Synopsis Structure Preserving Energy Functions in Power Systems by : K.R. Padiyar

A guide for software development of the dynamic security assessment and control of power systems, Structure Preserving Energy Functions in Power Systems: Theory and Applications takes an approach that is more general than previous works on Transient Energy Functions defined using Reduced Network Models. A comprehensive presentation of theory and applications, this book: Describes the analytics of monitoring and predicting dynamic security and emergency control through the illustration of theory and applications of energy functions defined on structure preserving models Covers different facets of dynamic analysis of large bulk power systems such as system stability evaluation, dynamic security assessment, and control, among others Supports illustration of SPEFs using examples and case studies, including descriptions of applications in real-time monitoring, adaptive protection, and emergency control Presents a novel network analogy based on accurate generator models that enables an accurate, yet simplified approach to computing total energy as the aggregate of energy in individual components The book presents analytical tools for online detection of loss of synchronism and suggests adaptive system protection. It covers the design of effective linear damping controllers using FACTS, for damping small oscillations during normal operation to prevent transition to emergency states, and emergency control based on FACTS, to improve first swing stability and also provide rapid damping of nonlinear oscillations that threaten system security during major disturbances. The author includes detection and control algorithms derived from theoretical considerations and illustrated through several examples and case studies on text systems.
