Synopsis On the Laws of the Poetic Art by : Anthony Hecht
A magisterial exploration of poetry’s place in the fine arts by one of the twentieth century's leading poets In this book, eminent poet Anthony Hecht explores the art of poetry and its relationship to the other fine arts. While the problems he treats entail both philosophic and theoretical discussion, he never allows abstract speculation to overshadow his delight in the written texts that he introduces, or in the specific examples of painting and music to which he refers. After discussing literature’s links with painting and music, Hecht investigates the theme of paradise and wilderness, especially in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. He then turns to the question of public and private art, exploring the ways in which all the arts participate in balances between private and public modes of discourse, and between an exclusive or elitist role and the openly political. Beginning with a discussion of architecture as an illustration of a more general theme of discord and balance, the penultimate lecture probes the inner contradictions of works of art and our reactions to them, while the final piece concerns art and morality.

Synopsis Research Handbook on Art and Law by : Jani McCutcheon
Featuring international contributions from leading and emerging scholars, this innovative Research Handbook presents a panoramic view of how law sees visual art, and how visual art sees law. It resists the conventional approach to art and law as inherently dissonant – one a discipline preoccupied with rationality, certainty and objectivity; the other a creative enterprise ensconced in the imaginary and inviting multiple, unique and subjective interpretations. Blending these two distinct disciplines, this unique Research Handbook bridges the gap between art and law.

Synopsis The Art of the Poetic Line by : James Longenbach
"Poetry is the sound of language organized in lines." James Longenbach opens The Art of the Poetic Line with that essential statement. Through a range of examples - from Shakespeare and Milton to Ashbery and Glück - Longenbach describes the function of line in metered, rhymed, syllabic, and free-verse poetry. That function is sonic, he argues, and our true experience of it can only be identified in relation to other elements in a poem. Syntax and the interaction of different kinds of line endings are primary to understanding line, as is the relationship of lineated poems to prose poetry. The Art of the Poetic Line is a vital new resource by one of America's most important critics and one of poetry's most engaging practitioners.

Synopsis Fundamentals of the Art of Poetry by : Oscar Mandel
Fundamentals of the Art of Poetry takes the reader on a journey that sets out with a consideration of the various arts humankind has created, and then focuses on the special art of poetry: what poetry is, what it does and must do in order to 'succeed' for whom it does what it does, and, in detail, how it goes about doing what it tries to do. Twenty-two chapters deal with subjects like 'The Constituencies for Art', 'What Meaning Means', 'Acceptable and Unacceptable Propositions', 'The Right Word in the Right Place', 'The Sounds that Matter in Poetry', 'Energetic Metaphor: the Major Figure' and so on, including an eloquent epilogue 'Touching Genius'. Writing with great brio and tough-minded lucidity, the Belgo-American poet, dramatist, scholar and essayist examines a host of concepts concerning the arts in general and poetry in particular. This highly original Ars poetica will be of interest to general readers, college students, poets curious about their own metier, and last but not least, literary critics and theorists who will encounter many a discreet challenge to current ideas in its pages.

Synopsis The Laws of Poetry by : Charles Gildon
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1721 edition. Excerpt: ... That is, it will appear in every part, tho' differently, throughout the work of a great and true Poet. It is confess'd, that in the greatest poets the height of genius does not shine equally in all parts of the poem, as is plain from the immortal Homer, Virgil, and Milton. Homer himself has been obferv'd by Horace sometimes to nod; and it is obvious to every judicious reader, that Virgil has not every where the fame vivacity or force; and it is equally plain, that Milton, for many lines together, is far from being so elevated and lofty ( I will not say flat and low) as in the general performance of his poem; but then all these three great poets shine out again in their own exalted lustre, which justifies what our Essay affirms: Which, though sometimes behind a cloud retird, Breaks out again, and is by all admir'd. I know my lord Roscommon, in his Essay upon translated verse, would needs have it, that the flatnesses, if I may so call them, or negligences which are found in some of Virgiss verses, were in that Poet a studied art, and not a defect; for thus he fays. Not thus our heroes of the former days Defervd and gaind their" neverfading bays; For I mi flake, or far the greatest part, Of 'what some call neglect, was study'd art. Wloen Virgil seems to trifle in a line, 'Its like a warningpiece, .which gives the sign, To wake your fancy, and prepare your sight, To teach the noble height of some unusual flight.. But But as this is only my lord's particular opinion, and will hold good in defence of Homey and Milton, as well as of Virgil; so I.presume it is not entirely to be depended upon; and Horace gives a more natural, and, if I mistake not, a more just excuse for these three great poets. Of ere in tamo fas est obrepere somnum. In so great...
