Synopsis Ohio Off the Beaten Path by : George Zimmermann

Florida Curiosities is your round-trip ticket to the wildest, wackiest, most outrageous people, places, and things the Sunshine State has to offer. Columnists David Grimes and Tom Becnel have combed Florida for one-of-a-kind gems that make their home state truly unique. You'll meet a 1,000-pound Bradenton bachelor named Snooty (a celebrity manatee) and a ninety-one-year old snake charmer from Punta Gorda. You'll hunt for the Bardin Booger and learn all the lyrics to the Booger ballad. You'll visit the Tito Gaona Trapeze Academy in Venice, where you can get in on the act. You'll go worm fiddling and try kudzu growing (best left to the professionals). You'll discover Big Daddy Don Garlits's drag racing museum in Ocala. And where else but in Florida would you find a museum dedicated to air-conditioning. Whether you were born and raised in Florida or are a recent transplant, Grimes and Becnel's home-grown humor will have you laughing out loud as they introduce you to neighbors you never knew you had and take you to places you never knew existed -- right in your own backyard. Synopsis Amick Partisan Rangers by : David Emmick

As the winds of war began to blow in the spring of 1861, John W. Amick joined the Greenbrier Sharpshooters. According to family legend he was a captain at Carnifex Ferry, Lewisburg and Dogwood Gap reported first to Jackson then later to Lee. In 1862, Captain John Amick led the scouts for General Loring as he recaptured the Kanawha Valley from the invading Yankees. During the war, the Amick scouts battled invaders on Sewell Mountain throughout 1862 and 1863. The Amick Company of Scouts were used as spies across western Virginia. As the Confederacy became overwhelmed in spring of 1864, Captain John resigned his commission to form a guerilla band to protect his family and home. The Amick Partisan Rangers quickly grew to a battalion of four companies commanded by captains Tyree, Halstead, McClung and Baumgardner. The Yankees soon put a price on his head - wanted dead or alive. But his mother said, "You've got to catch him before you can hang him." This is the story of the Amick Partisan Rangers.
