As a result 'odour control and prevention' has become an important consideration both in the management of existing facilities and in the design and gaining of planning consent for new works. A general review of literature published from 1990 to 2000 and unpublished (gray) literature on odors associated with municipal wastewater collection systems and treatment facilities, including biosolids handling. The literature review focused on several areas including odor characterization technology, odor sampling, analysis, measurement technology, and odor mitigation (control) technology.

The release of unpleasant odours during wastewater and sludge treatment and disposal is not new. However, in recent years the level of complaints concerning the release of these offensive odours has increased. This is in part a direct result of the encroachment of housing on lands surrounding existing wastewater and sludge treatment works, together with the raised awareness of the public over its rights related to environmental issues. To avoid the creation of nuisance odours in wastewater and sludge treatment requires an understanding of those processes that are responsible. Odours that are formed within wastewater and sludge will not create an odour nuisance until they are released into the atmosphere. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms by which odours are formed and then released and dispersed in order to provide effective control systems. The CIWEM-IAWQ odour conference enabled practitioners, regulators and researchers to present findings on a wide range of topics relating to the control and prevention of odours. Twenty-two papers have been selected for these proceedings. They examine the regulation of odour emissions, techniques used to measure and model odour emissions and treatment technologies used to control and prevent odour formation and emission.

This book provides an updated evaluation of the characterization and management of taste and odour (T&O) in source and drinking waters. Authored by international experts from the IWA Specialist Group on Off-flavours in the Aquatic Environment, the book represents an important resource that synthesizes current knowledge on the origins, mitigation, and management of aquatic T&O problems. The material provides new knowledge for an increasing widespread degradation of source waters and global demand for high quality potable water. Research into the sampling and measurement of odours has developed in a number of sectors, especially the agriculture, food and process industries, with knowledge from each sector being transferred to the wastewater and solid waste management sectors. Progressive developments in odour research have resulted in researchers re-tracing original research studies to understand the contribution and variability of differing sampling and measurement techniques. There are, however, very few reviews that compile earlier studies across each sector. This study looks at the information used to support current practices in odour sampling and measurement for impact reduction. Sampling for Measurement of Odours reviews European and other internationally available research studies to understand odour sampling and measurement practice in waste applications. The emphasis is placed on appropriate odour sampling and its relationship to differing measurement techniques. As recent developments in standardisation of odour measurement have reduced much of the variation and identified best practice in this area there is, at present, a far greater variation in sampling techniques with serious implications for the quality of samples obtained and their usefulness for assessing odour impact. The review considers the available information on uncontrolled area sources, identifies factors influencing sample losses or transformations and looks at information on the sources of variability identified through standardisation programmes. This need for this report was identified by the Odour Network, an EPSRC-sponsored discussion platform intended to promote multidisciplinary research in the areas of odour measurement, modelling and treatment. This project was undertaken in response to needs by the wastewater treatment industry to better understand the generation of odors from biosolids produced by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Its primary objective is to begin to establish relationships between WWTP process parameters and biosolids odors, so that more effective techniques for minimizing biosolids odors can be developed. The project consisted of a detailed field study involving extensive sampling and analyses at 11 WWTPs across North America with capacities from 13 to 350 million gallons per day (mgd). Biosolids samples were collected from the WWTPs at a number of sampling points, which were chosen to represent a complete snapshot of biosolids generation and handling at each WWTP. The sampling points started with influent wastewater, proceeded through primary and secondary clarification, and continued through digestion, dewatering, and onsite storage of dewatered biosolids cake. Laboratory-scale anaerobic storage tests were conducted to simulate odor development of biosolids in storage, prior to their beneficial reuse or disposal. A battery of analyses were performed on the biosolids samples by the participating utility laboratories, commercial laboratories, and specialized university laboratories. The analytical data were evaluated and compared with process and operation parameters at each participating WWTP.
