Synopsis Nutrition Research at the Leading Edge by : Russell E. Cassady

Nutraceuticals are established food components widely consumed as supplements to the diet, either as formulated products or for fortification of foods, particularly functional foods. Over the last two decades there has been a steady growth in research into the possible health benefits. Both the general public and the media have become increasingly interested, and this has coincided with a general interest in health issues. This has resulted in increasing usage of commercially available products, as well as their food sources. It is now well understood that modern pharmaceuticals cannot successfully treat all diseases, coupled with their lack of effectiveness in certain disease states, and the possibility of marked side effects. There is logical use of a number of nutraceuticals which are endogenous nutrients from a range of food sources, as many diseases maybe caused by deficiency states.

Synopsis Frontiers of Engineering by : National Academy of Engineering

In 1995 the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) initiated the Frontiers of Engineering Symposium program, which every year brings together 100 of the nation's future engineering leaders to learn about cutting-edge research and technical work in different engineering fields. On September 14-16, 2000, the National Academy of Engineering held its sixth Frontiers of Engineering Symposium at the Academies' Beckman Center in Irvine, California. Symposium speakers were asked to prepare extended summaries of their presentations, and it is those papers that are contained here. The intent of this book, and of the five that precede it in the series, is to describe the content and underpinning philosophy of this unique meeting and to highlight some of the exciting developments in engineering today.

Synopsis Nutrition and HealthTopics and Controversies by : Felix Bronner

Nutrition and Health: Topics and Controversies explores in detail the relationship between diet, nutritional status, and disease, and evaluates nutritional practices intended to minimize the incidence of and slow the progress of major chronic illnesses. National trends in nutritional awareness and the resulting changes in consumer behavior are discussed. Unlike other books on this subject, the authors take a stand on controversial issues in the field and document their positions with scientific data. Nutrients such as calcium, vitamin E, selenium, and antioxidants, their importance in overall nutrition, and their role in specific diseases are covered. Expertise in nutritional science is not required to gain the highly practical information in this book.
