Synopsis Numerical Modeling of Supercontinuum Generation in Optical Fibers by : François St-Hilaire
"This thesis reports the comparison of numerical modeling approaches for the extreme case ofpulse propagation in optical fibers leading to supercontinuum generation. The widely-usedgeneralized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is introduced along with two other propagationmodels, the Fourier-domain generalized Schrödinger equation and the nonlinear envelopeequation, which are physically more accurate and retain the same first-order differentialequation formalism. The performance of the three propagation model is investigated withsimulations of different experimental results from the literature. The numerical results showthat the Fourier-domain generalized Schrödinger equation and the nonlinear envelope equationare useful tools in specific cases and that the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equationis nonetheless sufficiently accurate to model supercontinuum generation in a wide range ofexperimental conditions. This is subsequently corroborated in a practical example of supercontinuumsource prototype optimization aided with numerical simulations"--

Synopsis Pulse Compression and Supercontinuum Generation by : R. Vasantha Jayakantha Raja
This book presents a study of nonlinear optical phenomena with ultra-broadband radiation and ultrashort pulses in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) using numerical modeling. For the description of these processes, two widely used techniques namely pulse compression and soliton induced supercontinuum generation are implemented. Hence, the goal of the book can be divided into two topics namely pulse compression and supercontinuum generation which are connected to each other by the investigation of ultrasort pulses and broadband spectrum in PCF. To analyse the pulse compression and supercontinuum process in PCF, several numerical and theoretical approaches such as fully vectorial effective index method, finite element method, projection operator method, split step Fourier method, modulational instability technique and self-similar analysis has been utilized.

Synopsis Solitons in Optical Fiber Systems by : Mario F. S. Ferreira
Solitons in Optical Fiber Systems Discover a robust exploration of the main properties and behaviors of solitons in fiber systems In Solitons in Optical Fiber Systems, distinguished researcher Dr. Mário F. S. Ferreira delivers a thorough treatment of the main characteristics of solitons in optical fiber communication systems and fiber devices, paying special attention to stationary and pulsating dissipative soliton pulses. The book discusses the technical aspects associated with the physical background and the theoretical description of soliton characteristics under different conditions. The author employs numerical analyses and variational approaches to describe soliton evolution and describes the phenomenon of supercontinuum generation and various solitonic effects observed in highly nonlinear fibers, like photonic crystal fibers. Readers will learn about different applications of fiber solitons in transmission systems, fiber lasers, couplers, and pulse compression schemes, as well as complex Ginzburg-Landau equations, which are used to model different types of dissipative systems. The book also includes: A thorough introduction to solitons, including the linear and nonlinear effects of a wave, the discovery of solitary waves, and the discovery of solitons in optical fibers An exploration of fiber dispersion and nonlinearity, including optical fiber dispersion, the pulse propagation equation, and the impact of fiber dispersion Practical discussions of nonlinear effects in optical fibers, including self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulations, four-wave mixing, and stimulated raman scattering In-depth treatments of solitons in optical fibers, including modulation instability, dark solitons, bistable solitons, XPM-paired solitons, and the variational approach Perfect for senior undergraduate and graduate students in courses dealing with fiber-optics technology, Solitons in Optical Fiber Systems is also an ideal resource for engineers and technicians in the fiber-optics industry and researchers of nonlinear fiber optics.

Synopsis Ultrafast Supercontinuum Generation in Transparent Solid-State Media by : Audrius Dubietis
This book presents the underlying physical picture and an overview of the state of the art of femtosecond supercontinuum generation in various transparent solid-state media, ranging from wide-bandgap dielectrics to semiconductor materials, and across various parts of the optical spectrum, from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. A particular emphasis is placed on the most recent experimental developments: multioctave supercontinuum generation with pumping in the mid-infrared spectral range, spectral control, power and energy scaling of broadband radiation and the development of simple, flexible and robust pulse compression techniques, which deliver few optical cycle pulses and which could be readily implemented in a variety of modern ultrafast laser systems. The expected audience includes graduate students, professionals and scientists working in the field of laser-matter interactions and ultrafast nonlinear optics.

Synopsis A Fast Method in Simulations of Supercontinuum Generation in Photonic Crystal Fibers by : Shuang Jin
In this thesis, general nonlinear Schrödinger equation is solved in very detailed numerical process by using Symmetrized Split-Step Fourier Method (S-SSFM), Higher-Order Symmetrized Split-Step Fourier Method (HO-S-SSFM) and Predictor-Corrector Symmetrized Split-Step Fourier Method (PC-S-SSFM). We simulated the SC generations in the PCF by using HO-S-SSFM and PC-S-SSFM respectively. To our knowledge, this is the first time the PC-S-SSFM is used in simulations of SC generation. Typical physical parameters of a PCF are chosen in our simulations. Based on the same condition, the simulation results of the HO-S-SSFM and the PC-S-SSFM are compared with the results from a published paper, and the comparison proves that our simulations are correct and accurate. Then, the time used by the HO-S-SSFM and the PC-S-SSFM in our simulations are compared at different points of propagation along the PCF and at the end of the PCF with different step sizes. The comparison results show that the PC-S-SSFM can save almost one third time used by the HO-S-SSFM under the same accuracy.
