Synopsis Nous Nous Reverrons, Mate! We’ll Meet Again, Mate! by : Allan McFadden

On the French Riviera, summer was approaching, and Mary-Anne Walton was due back in Cannes. I could hardly wait! I’m Dougay Roberre, ex-pat Australian living in Nice, and Mary-Anne had employed me as a second unit director for international movie producer Harold Kempenski to supervise the filming of snow-capped Swiss mountains for his upcoming production of Heidi. Ahead lay an uncomplicated sensuous summer with Mary-Anne. However, suspect property developer Paul Villan; a Thai kick-boxer; a Swiss starlet; and meddlesome international lawyers had other ideas. Why does trouble search me out? And why can’t people just keep their hands off my hedonistic dreams?

Synopsis Room 13 by : Richard Cruttwell

Stephen Caldwell finds himself rotting in a Polish prison for a murder he maintains he did not commit. Just who is the mysterious blonde woman found stabbed to death on the floor of his hotel bathroom and why would anyone want to frame him? Richard Cruttwell's Room 13: Between Hell & Redemption is an account of how the central character serves his time and is then released to begin his quest as to who did this to him and why. Moving between Poland and the UK, Room 13 Between Hell & Redemption is full of drama and intrigue with strong characterisation. Perhaps more than anything, it explores the weaknesses of the human condition and how we are all to some extent, shaped by our past experiences. This is a recurring theme in the book and leads the reader to a none too predictable conclusion.

Synopsis Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art by : Darius A. Spieth

Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Synopsis Thoughts on grammaticalization by : Christian Lehmann

"Thoughts on grammaticalization" was first published in a working-paper version in 1982 and became very influential immediately, even though it was properly published only in 1995. Despite its modest title, the book can be read as an advanced introduction to grammaticalization, though its conception is very original. The present edition contains a number of corrections of the 1995 edition. After a short review of the history of research, the work introduces and delimits the concepts related to grammaticalization. It then provides extensive exemplification of grammaticalization phenomena in diverse languages, ordered by grammatical domains such as the verbal, pronominal and nominal sphere and clause level relations. The final chapter presents a theory of grammaticalization which is based on the autonomy of the linguistic sign with respect to the paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes. This is the basis of the structural parameters that constitute grammaticalization. They are operationalized to the point of rendering degrees of grammaticalization measurable.

Synopsis The Notting Hill Mystery by : Charles Felix

Source documents compiled by insurance investigator Ralph Henderson are used to build a case against Baron "R___", who is suspected of murdering his wife. The baron's wife died from drinking a bottle of acid, apparently while sleepwalking in her husband's private laboratory. Henderson's suspicions are raised when he learns that the baron recently had purchased five life insurance policies for his wife. As Henderson investigates the case, he discovers not one but three murders. Although the baron's guilt is clear to the reader even from the outset, how he did it remains a mystery. Eventually this is revealed, but how to catch him becomes the final challenge; he seems to have committed the perfect crime.
