Synopsis Nostromo by : Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad’s thrilling history of a fictional South American country, its precious resources, and the men who will decide its fate The fictional country of Costaguana, loosely based on Colombia, has suffered a long string of despots more interested in lining their pockets than strengthening the nation. Discontent simmers throughout the land, but in the major port city of Sulaco, industry chugs along. Keeping the silver flowing are capable men like Nostromo, a loyal and proficient longshoreman for the shipping company that transports boatloads of the precious ore. When an unexpected military coup shakes up the country, Nostromo finds himself entrusted with hiding an untold fortune from the encroaching revolution. Nostromo must balance his loyalty to Sulaco’s industrialists against the country’s financial health and the intentions of the insurgents. In this intricate novel, Joseph Conrad combines politics, adventure, revenge, and revolution to illustrate how power and money can corrupt even the most righteous of men. Synopsis Nostromo A Tale of the Seaboard Volume I by : Joseph Conrad

The narrative deals with the ideals of a man and his inability to live up to them. The vividly drawn characters are dealt with severe blows at the hands of fate. It is a story of betrayal and deceit of the protagonist; not only to the other characters but also to his own principles. A beautiful amalgamation of the past and the present is ingeniously presented. An intriguing read.

Synopsis Nostromo a Tale of the Seaboard (Classic Reprint) by : Joseph Conrad

Excerpt from Nostromo a Tale of the Seaboard In the time of Spanish rule, and for many years afterwards, the town of Sulaco - the luxuriant beauty of the orange gardens bears witness to its antiquity - had never been commercially anything more important than a coasting port with a fairly large local trade in ox-hides and indigo. The clumsy deep-sea galleons of the conquerors that, needing a brisk gale to move at all, would lie becalmed, where your modern ship built on clipper lines forges ahead by the mere flapping of her sails, had been barred out of Sulaco by the prevailing calms of its vast gulf. Some harbours of the earth are made difficult of access by the treachery of sunken rocks and the tempests of their shores. Sulaco had found an inviolable sanctuary from the temptations of a trading world in the solemn hush of the deep Golfo Placido as if within an enormous semi-circular and unroofed temple open to the ocean, with its walls of lofty mountains hung with the mourning draperies of cloud. On one side of this broad curve in the straight sea-board of the Republic of Costaguana, the last spur of the coast range forms an insignificant cape whose name is Punta Mala. From the middle of the gulf the point of the land itself is not visible at all; but the shoulder of a steep hill at the back can be made out faintly like a shadow on the sky.
