Synopsis Nordic Shipyards by : Salminen, Esa

Shipbuilding has a long tradition in all the Nordic countries. Hence, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the BAT Group under the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production (also called HKP Group) awarded Vahanen Environment Oy, Finland, together with COWI AS, Denmark to prepare a Best Available Techniques (BAT) project on shipyards in the Nordic countries. The objectives of the project have been to: • review and describe the shipyard sector in the Nordic countries • review and describe the used techniques in the Nordic countries • identify and describe the Key Environmental Indicators from the Nordic perspective • identify and describe techniques that shall be included in the considerations of representing BAT in shipyards. The scope of the project has included steel ships. The main focus has been on surface treatment in relation to maintenance and repair.

Synopsis Nordic Best Practices by : Hillgrén, Anna

The working group on Sustainable Consumption and Production, under the Nordic Council of Ministers requested consultants from Gaia to identify and write out best Nordic practice cases of sustainable consumption and production to be shared internationally within the UNEP SCP Clearinghouse. This report is the second part and covers in total 19 examples of two particular themes on: 1) Sustainable Tourism 2) Consumer Information The cases have also been added into the UNEP’s 10 Year Frame-work Program (10YFP) information platform, the SCP Clearinghouse. The objective is to enhance international cooperation in order to accelerate a shift towards sustainable consumption and production in developed and developing countries. The SCP Clearinghouse is a web-based information sharing tool, which can be used by different actors as an inspiration for advancing SCP worldwide.

Early Ships and Seafaring: Water Transport Within Europe' builds on Professor Sen McGrail's 2006 volume 'Ancient Boats and Ships' by delving deeper into the construction and use of boats and ships between the stone age and AD1500 in order to provide up to date information. Regions covered will include the Mediterranean and Atlantic Europe. This interesting volume is easily accessible to those with little t no knowledge of the building and ises of boats, whether ancient or modern. Sen McGrail introduces the reader to this relatively new discipline through the theory and techniques used in the study of early boats as well as the many different types of evidence available to us, including archaeological, documentary, iconographic, experimental and ethnographic, and the natural, physical laws.

Synopsis Boats of the World by : Sean McGrail

Maritime archaeology, the study of man's early encounter with the rivers and seas of the world, only came to the fore in the last decades of the twentieth century, long after its parent discipline, terrestrial archaeology, had been established. Yet there were seamen long before there werefarmers, navigators before there were potters, and boatbuilders before there were wainwrights. In this book Professor McGrail attempts to correct some of the imbalance in our knowledge of the past by presenting the evidence for the building and use of early water transport: rafts, boats, and ships.

Synopsis BAT for combustion and incineration residues in a Circular Economy by : Hjelmar, Ole

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2022-542/ Combustion of biomass and incineration of solid waste and sewage sludge are important parts of the energy production and waste management infrastructure in most of the Nordic countries, but they also produce substantial quantities of residual waste in terms of bottom ash, fly ash and flue gas cleaning residues which contain potentially harmful substances in various amounts. Preferably, the ashes and residues should be treated and utilised as part of the Circular Economy. The project provides an overview of the utilisation options, including environmental and treatment requirements, and of the associated technical and regulatory frameworks and practical conditions of utilisation. Compliance of combinations of treatments and applications of ashes and residues with Best Available Techniques (BAT) has been assessed, and seven Nordic BAT candidates have been proposed and described in detail.
