Synopsis No Ball by : Chandramohan Puppala
Whispers, and then some progressively loud murmurs! Match fixing and illegal betting had begun to pervade the cricketing world. In 2000, when the much respected South African skipper, Hansie Cronje, was found guilty of match fixing soon after a trail of stars fell after the another. Prominent cricketers from India, South Africa, Kenya, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan, came out as fixers over the next decade. Life bans were handed out like sixes on no balls! The scandal really hit home in 2013, when spot-fixing allegations in the Indian Premier League resulted in the ouster of Indian and Rajasthan Royals bowler Sreesanth, along with two other players. This incident threw open the murky underworld connection – quite literally – in Indian cricket. For the first time, journalist Chandramohan Puppala traces cricket's biggest corruption back to the kingpin Dawood Ibrahim himself. Based on transcripts of police-recorded conversations and unpublished information about the players at the key of the storm, including some of India's biggest names, No Ball is a revealing account of the rot at the heart of Indian cricket.

Synopsis The Most Fun Thing by : Kyle Beachy
Named a Best Book of the Year by NPR • Southwest Review • Electric Literature Perfect for fans of Barbarian Days, this memoir in essays follows one man's decade-long quest to uncover the hidden meaning of skateboarding, and explores how this search led unexpectedly to insights on marriage, love, loss, American invention, and growing old. In January 2012, creative writing professor and novelist Kyle Beachy published one of his first essays on skate culture, an exploration of how Nike’s corporate strategy successfully gutted the once-mighty independent skate shoe market. Beachy has since established himself as skate culture's freshest, most illuminating, at times most controversial voice, writing candidly about the increasingly popular and fast-changing pastime he first picked up as a young boy and has continued to practice well into adulthood. What is skateboarding? What does it mean to continue skateboarding after the age of forty, four decades after the kickflip was invented? How does one live authentically as an adult while staying true to a passion cemented in childhood? How does skateboarding shape one's understanding of contemporary American life? Of growing old and getting married? Contemplating these questions and more, Beachy offers a deep exploration of a pastime—often overlooked, regularly maligned—whose seeming simplicity conceals universal truths. THE MOST FUN THING is both a rich account of a hobby and a collection of the lessons skateboarding has taught Beachy—and what it continues to teach him as he strugglesto find space for it as an adult, a professor, and a husband.

Synopsis The Myth and Propaganda of Black Buying Power by : Jared A. Ball
This Palgrave Pivot offers a history of and proof against claims of "buying power" and the impact this myth has had on understanding media, race, class and economics in the United States. For generations Black people have been told they have what is now said to be more than one trillion dollars of "buying power," and this book argues that commentators have misused this claim largely to blame Black communities for their own poverty based on squandered economic opportunity. This book exposes the claim as both a marketing strategy and myth, while also showing how that myth functions simultaneously as a case study for propaganda and commercial media coverage of economics. In sum, while “buying power” is indeed an economic and marketing phrase applied to any number of racial, ethnic, religious, gender, age or group of consumers, it has a specific application to Black America.

Synopsis Informational Tracking by : Sylvie Leleu-Merviel
“What is colour?”, “What is the precise meaning of the statement ‘the stock exchange closes at a 5% drop this evening’?”, “How are TV viewers defined?”, or “How can images produce meaning?” Such everyday questions are examined in this book. To make our analysis intuitive and understandable, numerous concrete examples illustrate our theoretical framework and concepts. The examples include gaming, fictional skits in leisure entertainment, and enigmas. The golden thread running through the text revisits the informational process and places the datum as its pivot. The epistemological perspective of our novel approach is that of “radical relativity”. This is based on the precept that a perceptual trace carries with it the spectrum of the process that has engendered it. Given this, the informational tracking endeavour tracks the meaning-making process, notably through interpretive scaffoldings that leads to plausible realities.
