Synopsis Night Moves by : Jonathan Kellerman

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The master of the psychological thriller makes all the right moves in this new novel of spellbinding suspense. Even with all his years of experience, LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis knows there are crimes his skill and savvy cannot solve alone. That’s when he calls on brilliant psychologist Alex Delaware to read between the lines, where the darkest motives lurk. And if ever the good doctor’s insight is needed, it’s at the scene of a murder as baffling as it is brutal. There’s no spilled blood, no evidence of a struggle, and, thanks to the victim’s missing face and hands, no immediate means of identification. And no telling why the disfigured corpse of a stranger has appeared in an upscale L.A. family’s home. Chet Corvin, his wife, and their two teenage children are certain the John Doe is unknown to them. Despite that, their cooperation seems guarded. And that’s more than Milo and Alex can elicit from the Corvins’ creepy next-door neighbor—a notorious cartoonist with a warped sense of humor and a seriously antisocial attitude. As the investigation ensues, it becomes clear that this well-to-do suburban enclave has its share of curious eyes, suspicious minds, and loose lips. And as Milo tightens the screws on potential persons of interest—and Alex tries to breach the barriers that guard their deepest secrets—a strangling web of corrupted love, cold-blooded greed, and shattered trust is exposed. Though the grass may be greener on these privileged streets, there’s enough dirt below the surface to bury a multitude of sins. Including the deadliest. Praise for Night Moves “Exceptionally well-plotted . . . Newcomers will find this an easy entry point into this long-running series.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A taut, procedural thriller . . . One of the most tightly plotted, tightly written of the Alex Delaware series . . . a real puzzler . . . Fans of the long-running Delaware series will be thrilled with this one, and because each book functions just fine as a stand-alone, there’s nothing keeping new readers from diving in.”—Booklist “Jonathan Kellerman continues to amaze, dazzle, delight and entertain. . . . Night Moves is simply the best.”—Bookreporter

Synopsis They Had to Die That Night by : Richard R. Wier Jr.

In the early morning hours of October 19, 1968, a fire spread rapidly through a suburban home in Wilmington, Delaware, killing three sleeping victims: a six-year-old girl and a retired couple. The murderer spread ten containers of gasoline around the first floor of the home and up the stairs onto the second floor. The murderer deliberately blocked any escape from the second floor where the victims were sleeping. A fourth potential victim escaped by chance, having woken up and interrupted the murderer before he could complete his murderous plan.Richard R. Wier Jr. was a young deputy attorney general in the Delaware Attorney General's Office at the time of the murders. He and a fellow prosecutor, John Mulford, were assigned to investigate and prosecute the person responsible for the horrific crimes. It would become the longest criminal jury trial in a Delaware state court at the time. This is the true behind-the-scenes story of the prosecution's efforts to find out who committed these murders and the actual decisions made by the prosecutors in bringing the case to trial. This compelling story brings the reader face-to-face with the killer's motives and the aftermath of the criminal trial. It has such diverse characters as a professional arsonist for the mob and a world-renowned expert on flame dynamics who had no hands—his artificial hands covered with black gloves. It has adultery, misappropriation of funds, lie detector tests, unethical business practices, commercial crimes. At its centerpiece is a killer who appears to be a psychopath by his lack of remorse, conscience, and connection to the victims. You will ask the question, was justice done for the three deceased victims by their family's treatment of the murderer? Start now to answer that question.

Synopsis Delaware and Hudson by : Jim Shaughnessy

Here, in a pictorial history, Jim Shaughnessy turns an eloquent photographer's eye to the Delaware & Hudson, the line that began in 1823 as a canal system to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York State. The D&H extended from Montreal to the coal fields of northeastern Pennsylvania. It was active for 170 years, when the route was sold in 1993 to the Canadian Pacific Railway Corporation. The line made early railroad fame by importing from England the famous Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive in America. This occurred during a great expansion into gravity, an interesting phase which took advantage of the mountainous terrain. The nineteenth century saw a period of economic growth and amalgamation, which was shaped by extremely able and ambitiou company presidents. Eventually the D&H advertised itself as "the Bridge Line to New England and Canada." Mountainous terrain around the coal mines challenged the line with heavy grades, so it was natural for one of its presidents, L. F. Loree, to be fascinated with experimental traction power. The many Loree locomotives, leaders in progressive design, are pictured and described herein. Because a good railroad history is always an economic history of a region, this book will surely please historian, too. Delaware & Hudson is a definitive work, encompassing the mining of the region and detailing the steamboat operations on Lakes George and Champlain. Syracuse University Press is pleased to reissue this exemplary study of a railroad. Delaware & Hudson has—and will—continue to raise the standards for all future railroad books.
