Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. Mitochondria are multifunctional organelles that actively participate in the immune-inflammatory response in various pathologies. This volume updates readers on knowledge about mitochondria function. Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a treatment delivery technique with reports starting in the early 20th century. There are numerous advantages of IORT in oncology including delivery of a tumoricidal radiation dose in a single treatment, direct visualization of the treatment area of interest, decreasing dose to surrounding tissues, among others. In this series we focus on the clinical application, radiobiology and physics of IORT with an emphasis on the Intrabeam system. As medicine and health care continue to evolve the new frontier of personalized medicine must continue to rigorously evaluate and implement technologies that limit costs and provide meaningful therapeutic benefit.
