Sustainable Urban Mobility Pathways examines how sustainable urban mobility solutions contribute to achieving worldwide sustainable development and global climate change targets, while also identifying barriers to implementation and strategies to overcome them. Urbanization is a global phenomenon that hugely constrains existing transportation infrastructure in cities. Urban transportation (UT) challenges are more significant in developing countries with rapid development as the land occupation is dense.Limited urban space and infrastructure fail to meet the increasing traffic demands and to provide reasonable service quality. Therefore betterment of UT systems is more required than ever. Infrastructural development and transportation operations are mainly directed at citizen welfare and it requires huge capital investments. States initiate urban development by inviting private participation so that operational and commercial risks are minimized and quality of execution is better. Several aspects in planning and management of global UT projects are common. But the approach and solutions are typically developed for a local context and relevance. Specific UT challenges are land use planning, socioeconomic distribution, project designing, implementation, financial analysis and governmental policies. A comprehensive background of UT systems, challenges involved and various approaches adopted by different countries are presented along with five real-life Asian cases. The book is aimed as a one-point reference on modern day developments on urban transportation for a readership of consultants, practitioners, developers, policy makers, and academicians .

Urban transport systems worldwide are faced by a multitude of challenges. Among the most visible of these are the traffic gridlocks experienced on city roads and highways all over the world. The prescribed solution to transport problems in most cities has thus been to build more infrastructures for cars, with a limited number of cities improving public transport systems in a sustainable manner. However, a number of challenges faced by urban transport systems – such as greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution and road traffic accidents – do not necessarily get solved by the construction of new infrastructure. Planning and Design for Sustainable Urban Mobility argues that the development of sustainable urban transport systems requires a conceptual leap. The purpose of ‘transportation’ and ‘mobility’ is to gain access to destinations, activities, services and goods. Thus, access is the ultimate objective of transportation. As a result, urban planning and design should focus on how to bring people and places together, by creating cities that focus on accessibility, rather than simply increasing the length of urban transport infrastructure or increasing the movement of people or goods. After three decades of rapid economic growth, China became the world’s second largest economy in 2010 after the United States of America. Along with the prospect of lifting millions out of poverty and improving living standards, China is facing yet new challenges of rapid urbanization. Recent research findings show that in 2012 urbanization rate was 52.6% in China (Lacy et al., 2013). It is predicted that by 2020 the number of megacities in China with an urban population of more than 10 million will increase to thirteen. Along with the increase in urban population and living standards there has been rapid increase of car ownership in China. It is estimated that there are more than five million vehicles in Beijing (Cheng, 2013; Economist, 2013). Large cities and prefecture-level cities already contributed 89.6% of China’s total industrial CO2 emissions. One day in January 2013 air in Beijing was heavily polluted to a level of toxicity (smog) forty times the standard safe level set by the World Health Organization (Economist, 2013).At the international level, transport contributed 61.5% to world petroleum consumption and 22.3% to global CO2 emissions in 2010 (IEA, 2012). While the overall level of CO2 emissions in developed economies is stabilizing and in some cases declining, the levels in the developing and emerging economies are increasing. Large emerging economies with megacities will imminently become the major concerns of transport-related CO2 emissions. Without strategic innovations in the automotive industry and transport management system the current state of China’s transport sector is not sustainable. The long-term sustainable solutions are likely to emerge from the interplay of economic, environmental, social and technological factors.The Special Issue, partnered with the Second International Symposium on Sustainable Mobility, focuses on the issues of developing policies and corporate strategies to help the automotive industry, transport management systems, and urban planning to embark on a sustainable path to future growth and development (WBCSD, 2007; World Bank, 2008). The critical debate and research findings of this issue shed light on future research and practice on sustainable mobility in emerging economies.

This book gathers together innovative research and practical findings relating to urban mobility transformation. It is especially intended to provide academicians, researchers, practitioners and decision makers with effective strategies and techniques that can support urban mobility in a sustainable way. The chapters, which report on contributions presented at the 5th Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility, held virtually on June 17-19, 2020, from Greece, cover the thematic areas of: social networks and traveler behavior; applications of technologies in transportation and big data analytics; transport infrastructure and traffic management; and transportation modeling and impact assessment.
