Synopsis What is a Disaster? by : Enrico Louis Quarantelli
What is a Disaster? Addresses the most basic question in the field: that of defining the phenomenon of study. For theoretical advancement, it is important that researchers begin to develop a consensus about the meaning of disasters and related phenomena. With the rise in international terrorism, one must clarify whether these events are disasters and if so, what kind of disasters. Similarly, in addition to natural disasters, do we include riots, explosions, nuclear power plant accidents, damn collapses, and land subsidence under the same conceptual umbrella? What practical and theoretical differences does it make if the same label is used or not used for such different situations? What is a Disaster? Brings together twelve social scientists representing eight disciplines and seven countries to share their definition and vision of disasters. In the process, a wide range of views are expressed and issues raised regarding the relationship of academic versus practical definitions, the impact of grouping types of disasters in different ways, and the epistemologies on which theoretical growth should rest. The forum provided involves the presentation of each author's views, followed by a discussant's critique, and closed with a response from the author. The editor's close the volume with discussions of the theoretical framework of disaster research and an agenda for disaster research in the twenty-first century.

Synopsis New Answers to Old Questions by : Aaron Connelly
Outside Myanmar, the 2021 coup d’état has often been portrayed as the end of a hopeful period for the country. In this Adelphi book, however, Aaron Connelly and Shona Loong argue that the Aung San Suu Kyi government that preceded it was a false dawn, unlikely to fulfil the international community's aspirations for a stable, peaceful and strong Myanmar. Instead, the movement opposing the 2021 coup holds much greater promise – despite the bloody conflict that dominates the news today. Connelly and Loong survey three fundamental relationships that have shaped Myanmar before and after the coup – between the military and the state, between the majority Burmese and ethnic minorities, and between Myanmar and the world – to explain how opposition to the coup has shifted all of them in a more liberal, pluralist and cosmopolitan direction.

Synopsis This Distracted and Anarchical People: New Answers for Old Questions about the Civil War-Era North by : Andrew L. Slap
These essays range widely throughout the history of the Civil War North, using new methods and sources to reexamine old theories and discover new aspects of the nation's greatest conflict. Many of these issues are just as important today as they were a century and a half ago. What were the extent and limits of wartime dissent in the North? How could a president most effectively present himself to the public? Can the savagery of war ever be tamed? How did African Americans create and maintain their families?

Synopsis Answers to Questions about Old Jewelry, 1840-1950 by : Jeanenne Bell
Jewellery styles were influenced by wars, the economy, events like the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and the growth of industrialisation. Sentiment was reflected in hair jewellery made from a loved one's hair, lockets containing family pictures, and pins bearing names and catch-phrases of importance to their period. This book gives you the historical background, the periods' fashion trends, and detailed descriptions of popular jewels, so you can have an even greater appreciation for the pieces in your collection. The book also includes information about: How jewellery is manufactured; How to determine what kind of metal an item is made from; Determining whether a stone is synthetic; A listing of maker's marks to help you identify and date pieces.

Synopsis Mood, Aspect, Modality Revisited by : Joanna Blaszczak
What is a linguistic category and what kinds of categories do the labels subjunctive, imperative, future, aspect, and modality refer to? The current literature assumes a straightforward mapping between grammatical category and semantic function, and descriptions of well-studied languages cultivate a sense of predictability in patterns. However, as the editors and contributors of "Mood, Aspect, Modality Revisited" show, this predictability and stability vanish once lesser known patterns and languages are studied. While it is feasible to retain certain distinctions among tense, aspect, and mood (TAM) in analysis of specific issues in specific languages, ongoing formal and experimental research seems to indicate that these traditional grammatical distinctions may ultimately be illusionary. "Mood, Aspect, Modality Revisited" seeks more general or fundamental grammatical structures that can encompass the breadth of related concepts traditionally placed in the TAM categories."

Synopsis The Answers Book by : Ken Ham
The authors attempt to present detailed answers to what they describe as the twelve most-asked questions on Genesis, creation and evolution. Their answers are based upon a literal interpretation of the Bible and thus a creationist interpretation of Genesis.
