Synopsis Neoliberalism and Unequal Development by : Roser Manzanera-Ruiz
Since the 1970s, neoliberalism has evolved from ideology to political programme, from political programme to public policy, and from public policy to constitutional rule. This process of change has been made possible through the endorsement of an uncritical, a-historical, and apolitical economic theory that legitimized technocratic despotism, financial deregulation, precarious labour, and constitutional-political emptying. This book examines critical perspectives in mainstream neoliberal development analysis. It examines the neoliberal experiment as a global historical construct through the cases of Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The analysis begins in 1980 with the Structural Adjustment Plans in Latin America and Africa, followed in 1990 by Maastricht in the case of Europe and the euphoric shift that took place, typified by the Africa Rising narrative, which attempts to promote the idea of an economically emerging continent. It also considers the weakness of the state resulting from neo-liberal austerity and fiscal stabilization policies, which have amplified the inability to collectively deal with the social, economic, and political impact of the COVID-19 crisis. One of the key features of the book is the extensive comparative analysis between regions, using case studies, including examples from African countries. The authors connect the different regional perspectives, included in the book, in a clear and coherent way, such that it will appeal to students and scholars interested in the social, economic, and political outcomes of globalization and will also be of interest to official development agencies and third sector organizations in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.

Synopsis Neo-liberalism and AIDS Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa by : C. O'Manique
O'Manique critically examines the evolution of the policy response to AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa through a feminist political economy lens, focusing on the relationship between neo-liberalism, the spread of AIDS and the hegemonic policy response. It explores the ways in which AIDS has been constructed as a 'development' problem and how AIDS knowledges and institutions have evolved and have shaped interventions in the AIDS sector. Central to the analysis is a historical case-study of Uganda.

Synopsis Africa and Globalization by : Toyin Falola
This book considers the promises and challenges of globalization for Africa. Why have African states been perennially unable to diversify their economies and move beyond export of primary produce, even as Southeast Asia has made a tremendous leap into manufacturing? What institutional impediments are in play in African states? What reforms would mitigate the negative effects of globalization and distribute its benefits more equitably? Covering critical themes such as political leadership, security challenges, the creative sector, and community life, essays in this volume argue that the starting point for Africa’s meaningful engagement with the rest of the world must be to look inward, examine Africa’s institutions, and work towards reforms that promote inclusiveness and stability.

Synopsis Pan-Africanism in Ghana by : Justin C. Williams
Pan-Africanism in Ghana is an interdisciplinary exploration of the various ways Pan-African politics have been expressed by politicians in the Republic of Ghana from the colonial era to the present. By focusing on transnational politics in the context of a single nation over time, this study gives critical insight into the complex global, national, and local pressures that shaped Pan-African politics and the Republic of Ghana simultaneously. While there has been a great deal of work on Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana's First Republic, this book's major contribution is to trace Pan-African ideas in Ghanaian politics past the Nkrumah era, through the years of weak civilian governments and military rule, to the present. This approach explains how and why Pan-Africanism has shifted, inresponse to major global geopolitical changes and the objectives of Ghanaian political elites, from an anti-imperial African socialist oriented ideology to one supporting neoliberal nation-building. By viewing Ghanaian history through the lenses of economics, cultural anthropology, and political economy, this study reveals the extremely malleable nature of Pan-African ideas and the ingenuity of politicians looking to utilize them for a variety of political projects. In short, Ghana's conception as a springboard for a greater African union left a legacy subsequent civilian and military leaders of various ideological shades had to grapple with. The ways they rejected, embraced, or sought to subvert the nation's internationalist past helps us understand the mechanics of decolonization/nation-building in a globalizing world. Pan-Africanism in Ghana contributes to the historiography of Ghana by focusing on often overlooked figures and placing the development of the West African nation in a wider global context, while also presenting new multi-faceted arguments to debates about the history of Pan-Africanism. This book is part of the African World Series, edited by Toyin Falola, Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, University of Texas at Austin. "This book is very informative as it offers the much needed help for comprehending the Pan African movement. Thus, it can serve as an excellent reference for general readers and students of Pan-Africanism alike, who want to learn how the concept can be used to shed light on and respond to the forces of globalization and address the current predicaments of the people of Africa."--Zerihun Berhane Weldegebriel, Addis Ababa University, African Studies Quarterly

Synopsis Extracting Profit by : Lee Wengraf
Extracting profit explains why Africa, in the first decade and a half of the twenty-first century, has undergone an economic boom. This period of “Africa rising” did not lead to the creation of jobs but has instead fueled the growth of the extraction of natural resources and an increasingly-wealthy African ruling class.
