Synopsis Natural Function Algebras by : Charles E. Rickart

The term "function algebra" usually refers to a uniformly closed algebra of complex valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space. Such Banach alge bras, which are also called "uniform algebras", have been much studied during the past 15 or 20 years. Since the most important examples of uniform algebras consist of, or are built up from, analytic functions, it is not surprising that most of the work has been dominated by questions of analyticity in one form or another. In fact, the study of these special algebras and their generalizations accounts for the bulk of the re search on function algebras. We are concerned here, however, with another facet of the subject based on the observation that very general algebras of continuous func tions tend to exhibit certain properties that are strongly reminiscent of analyticity. Although there exist a variety of well-known properties of this kind that could be mentioned, in many ways the most striking is a local maximum modulus principle proved in 1960 by Hugo Rossi [RIl]. This result, one of the deepest and most elegant in the theory of function algebras, is an essential tool in the theory as we have developed it here. It holds for an arbitrary Banaeh algebra of £unctions defined on the spectrum (maximal ideal space) of the algebra. These are the algebras, along with appropriate generalizations to algebras defined on noncompact spaces, that we call "natural func tion algebras".

Synopsis Harmonic Functions on Groups and Fourier Algebras by : Cho-Ho Chu

This research monograph introduces some new aspects to the theory of harmonic functions and related topics. The authors study the analytic algebraic structures of the space of bounded harmonic functions on locally compact groups and its non-commutative analogue, the space of harmonic functionals on Fourier algebras. Both spaces are shown to be the range of a contractive projection on a von Neumann algebra and therefore admit Jordan algebraic structures. This provides a natural setting to apply recent results from non-associative analysis, semigroups and Fourier algebras. Topics discussed include Poisson representations, Poisson spaces, quotients of Fourier algebras and the Murray-von Neumann classification of harmonic functionals.

Synopsis Abstract Linear Algebra by : Morton L. Curtis

Intended for a first course on the subject, this text begins from scratch and develops the standard topics of Linear Algebra. Its progresses simply towards its ultimate goal, the Theorem of Hurwitz, which argues that the only normed algebras over the real numbers are the real numbers, the complex numbers, the quaternions, and the octonions. The book stresses the complete logical development of the subject.

Synopsis Concrete Functional Calculus by : R. M. Dudley

Concrete Functional Calculus focuses primarily on differentiability of some nonlinear operators on functions or pairs of functions. This includes composition of two functions, and the product integral, taking a matrix- or operator-valued coefficient function into a solution of a system of linear differential equations with the given coefficients. In this book existence and uniqueness of solutions are proved under suitable assumptions for nonlinear integral equations with respect to possibly discontinuous functions having unbounded variation. Key features and topics: Extensive usage of p-variation of functions, and applications to stochastic processes. This work will serve as a thorough reference on its main topics for researchers and graduate students with a background in real analysis and, for Chapter 12, in probability.

Synopsis Discourses on Algebra by : Igor R. Shafarevich

Using various examples this monograph shows that algebra is one of the most beautiful forms of mathematics. In doing so, it explains the basics of algebra, number theory, set theory and probability. The text presupposes very limited knowledge of mathematics, making it an ideal read for anybody new to the subject. The author, I.R. Shafarevich, is well-known across the world as one of the most outstanding mathematicians of this century as well as one of the most respected mathematical writers.

Synopsis Algebras of Linear Transformations by : Douglas R. Farenick

This book studies algebras and linear transformations acting on finite-dimensional vector spaces over arbitrary fields. It is written for readers who have prior knowledge of algebra and linear algebra. The goal is to present a balance of theory and example in order for readers to gain a firm understanding of the basic theory of finite-dimensional algebras and to provide a foundation for subsequent advanced study in a number of areas of mathematics.

Synopsis Idempotent Matrices over Complex Group Algebras by : Ioannis Emmanouil

The theory of idempotent matrices with entries in complex group algebras has recently experienced a revival, in view of its close relationship with deep geometric problems and conjectures. The relevant questions studied in this book for general groups are motivated by specific examples. A variety of techniques is employed from commutative algebra, homological algebra and functional analysis. The book can serve as an introduction to this lively research area. The pace is suitable for independent study and the level of the presentation not very demanding. The exercises at the end of each chapter form an essential part of the book.
