Synopsis Ministers and Masters by : Charity R. Carney

In Ministers and Masters Charity R. Carney presents a thorough account of the way in which Methodist preachers constructed their own concept of masculinity within -- and at times in defiance of -- the constraints of southern honor culture of the early nineteenth century. By focusing on this unique subgroup of southern men, the book explores often-debated concepts like southern honor and patriarchy in a new way. Carney analyzes Methodist preachers both involved with and separate from mainstream southern society, and notes whether they served as itinerants -- venturing into rural towns -- or remained in city churches to witness to an urban population. Either way, they looked, spoke, and acted like outsiders, refusing to drink, swear, dance, duel, or even dress like other white southern men. Creating a separate space in which to minister to southern men, women, and children, oftentimes converting a dancehall floor into a pulpit, they raised the ire of non- Methodists around them. Carney shows how understanding these distinct and often defiant stances provides an invaluable window into antebellum society and also the variety of masculinity standards within that culture. In Ministers and Masters, Carney uses ministers' stories to elucidate notions of secular sinfulness and heroic Methodist leadership, explores contradictory ideas of spiritual equality and racial hierarchy, and builds a complex narrative that shows how numerous ministers both rejected and adopted concepts of southern mastery. Torn between convention and conviction, Methodist preachers created one of the many "Souths" that existed in the nineteenth century and added another dimension to the well-documented culture of antebellum society.

Synopsis Musings by : Victor Andrade

Our century is the urban century - a century in which the balance between the urban and rural has been tipped, with more than half of the world's population now living in cities. It is also a century characterized by an unprecedented urbanization that has affected both urban form and urban life, and a century where the role of urban design has never been so intensified - and so urgent. This book explores emergent theories and practices relating to urban design in order to understand current processes of urbanization better and to intervene in built environments with a focus on the quality of life within them. Through a series of articles and projects, Musings - An Urban Design Anthology brings together researchers, practitioners, and students with the aim of providing a multilayered and nuanced perspective on the discipline of urban design. The book explores a number of optics through which urban design can be reflected upon and ways in which the contemporary built environment can be intervened with. In this way, the book navigates new frontiers in search of a better understanding of emerging urban culture. This journey presents a varied account of the urban design field through chapters that reveal core themes framing both the theoretical and practical challenges of contemporary urbanity: a) Performativity, b) Mobility, c) Transformation, and d) Design and Method. Illustrating the direct relationship between research and teaching, the book investigates these themes through research and the project work of students at both the Bachelor and Masters level of urban design at Aalborg University. The book also encourages continued discussion in the field of urban design through this - a contribution of our musings.

Synopsis The Masters and the Path by : Charles Webster Leadbeater

One of the fundamental theosophic beliefs is that there exists a collection of true knowledge that is the foundation of all world religions. In pursuit of this truth and the perfection of mankind, humans are constantly reborn, evolving toward their highest state. In this book, originally published in 1925, Charles Leadbeater discusses the existence of Masters, or men who have reached the highest state of human consciousness, and how they can be identified. He further explains to the reader how they may make their own way on the path toward perfection. Anyone interested in religious studies will be interested in this classic example of theosophical philosophy.English clergyman turned spiritualist CHARLES WEBSTER LEADBEATER (1854-1934) was ordained as an Anglican priest, but later joined the prominent Theosophical Society and traveled to India to study alternative spiritual and occult practices, eventually settling into his life as a clairvoyant and author. His other works include Man Visible and Invisible and The Science of the Sacrament.
