Synopsis The History of Museums Vol 2 by : Edward Edwards

Museums and collecting is now a major area of cultural studies. This selected group of key texts opens the investigation and appreciation of museum history. Edward Edwards, chief pioneer of municipal public libraries, chronicles the founders and early donors to the British Museum. Greenwood and Murray provide informative pictures of the early history of the museum movement. Sir William Flower, Director of the British Museum (Natural History), takes a pioneering philosophical approach to the sphere of natural history in relation to museums. Similarly, Acland and Ruskin discuss and explore the relationships of art and architecture to museums.

Synopsis Panamanian Museums and Historical Memory by : Ana Luisa Sánchez Laws

Panama is an ethnically diverse country with a recent history of political conflict which makes the representation of historical memory an especially complex and important task for the country’s museums. This book studies new museum projects in Panama with the aim of identifying the dominant narratives that are being formed as well as those voices that remain absent and muted. Through case analyses of specific museums and exhibitions the author identifies and examines the influences that form and shape museum strategy and development.

Synopsis Museums, Their History and Their Use, Vol. 1 by : David Murray

Excerpt from Museums, Their History and Their Use, Vol. 1: With a Bibliography and List of Museums in the United Kingdom Having at various times, during the last thirty years, visited the principal museums of the United Kingdom, of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, Finland and Russia, Austria, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Holland, the United States and Canada, I was anxious to learn something of the history and development of museums as scientific institutions. Strange to say, however, there is little or nothing bearing upon the subject in the ordinary books of reference. There are only twenty-three lines upon it in the last edition of Chambers' Cyclopaedia; there is no article upon Museums in the last edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, but there is a short notice, principally relating to art museums, in the recent supplement to this work. "Museum" does not appear as a title in Leon Vallee's Bibliographie des bibliographies or Petzholdt's Bibliotheca bibliographica. "Museums" is not an independent subject in Mr. Fortescue's exhaustive Subject-index of the modern works in the British Museum, but is included under "Exhibitions" and "Natural History" and such headings as "Anatomy," "Art," "Ceramics" and the like. The title only casually occurs in Mr. Sonnenschein's valuable Readers Guide and The Best Books. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
