Synopsis Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling.

Synopsis Common Musculoskeletal Problems by : James M. Daniels

Primary care physicians are increasingly called upon to identify and manage complex musculoskeletal issues in their patients. This second edition of Common Musculoskeletal Problems in Primary Care: A Handbook is an excellent point of care resource for health care providers to better diagnose and treat patients presenting with common musculoskeletal complaints. Each chapter in this book focuses on a specific joint or region and discusses anatomy, red flags, approach to the patient, common clinical presentations and management, and includes a flow diagram to help direct management and follow-up of a patient’s problem. A number of important updates in the field have been addressed in this revised version, most notably the inclusion of information on meaningful use. Meaningful Use legislation requires that healthcare providers give documentation on diagnosis and treatment to every patient at the time of their evaluation and as such, each chapter of this revised edition includes patient instructions and education sections for clinicians. Updated algorithms and physical examination sheets are provided and are formatted to easily fit into an electronic medical record. Featuring a user-friendly approach and step-by-step guidelines for managing a number of common musculoskeletal conditions, this handbook is an ideal reference for medical students, primary care residents and practicing primary care providers alike.

Synopsis Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace by : Institute of Medicine

Every year workers' low-back, hand, and arm problems lead to time away from jobs and reduce the nation's economic productivity. The connection of these problems to workplace activities-from carrying boxes to lifting patients to pounding computer keyboards-is the subject of major disagreements among workers, employers, advocacy groups, and researchers. Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace examines the scientific basis for connecting musculoskeletal disorders with the workplace, considering people, job tasks, and work environments. A multidisciplinary panel draws conclusions about the likelihood of causal links and the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. The panel also offers recommendations for what actions can be considered on the basis of current information and for closing information gaps. This book presents the latest information on the prevalence, incidence, and costs of musculoskeletal disorders and identifies factors that influence injury reporting. It reviews the broad scope of evidence: epidemiological studies of physical and psychosocial variables, basic biology, biomechanics, and physical and behavioral responses to stress. Given the magnitude of the problem-approximately 1 million people miss some work each year-and the current trends in workplace practices, this volume will be a must for advocates for workplace health, policy makers, employers, employees, medical professionals, engineers, lawyers, and labor officials.

Chapters are sectioned according to the anatomical area of the body. Each chapter consists of Basic Anatomy, Subjective (including differential diagnosis and red flags) and Objective examination, Observation and Physical examination, special tests (and their reliability), Pathologies, key points and flow charts for triaging. Where possible, we have used evidence based research to suppliment the practice based experience within the book. Some special chapters are dedicated to common pathologies seen in the elderly and children/ adolescents. Other chapters include Joint injections in primary care, Medicines that conflict with MSK diagnosis/management, common blood results and their meaning and common connective tissue disorders. Where possible, we have supplemented chapters with Scans, X rays, Pictures and flow charts to help explain the simplicity of each pathology. Synopsis Musculoskeletal Injuries and Conditions by : Se Won Lee, MD

Musculoskeletal Injuries and Conditions: Assessment and Management is a practical guide to diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in clinical practice. More comprehensive than a handbook, yet more clinically-focused than a desk reference, this volume is a one-stop guide for clinicians who deal with musculoskeletal disorders and injuries in the practice setting. The book is organized by anatomic region, from neck to toe, and written in outline format. Each chapter concisely presents the basic knowledge that every practitioner needs to have at the ready in the outpatient clinical context. Taking a uniform approach based on isolating symptoms and the location of the pain, the book presents a uniquely practical template for non-operative management of a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal problems. All chapters include epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, physical examination, diagnostic studies, and treatment. Flowcharts for differential diagnosis and initial management are provided for chief complaints. Helpful tables, lists, and over 150 anatomic illustrations supplement the text throughout. Synopsis Clinical Foundations of Musculoskeletal Medicine by : Robert J. Esther

Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders have a high prevalence and are one of the main reasons for patients to consult with a provider. For a range of issues from injury to back pain to rheumatic disease, musculoskeletal pathology is the second most common reason for a patient to see a primary care provider. However, despite their prevalence and significant socioeconomic impact, musculoskeletal disorders are relatively undertaught in medical schools in the United States. While all medical, nursing and physician assistant students receive exposure to some MSK content, in many medical schools this material does not receive curricular exposure commensurate with its prevalence. This practical textbook fills in that gap. All aspects of musculoskeletal disease and its management are presented concisely for quick reference and review, with each chapter opening with clear goals and objectives. The text begins with a discussion of the anatomy and physiology of bone, cartilage and muscle, including imaging techniques and interpretation. Musculoskeletal infections, tumors and vascular conditions are then covered, along with common rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, metabolic bone disease, and age-specific and traumatic conditions. Finally, the upper and lower extremity and spine are thoroughly discussed in terms of anatomy/pathoanatomy, common clinical conditions, physical exam, and common radiographic and clinical correlations. The main audience for Clinical Foundations of Musculoskeletal Medicine is medical students seeking to improve their understanding of common musculoskeletal conditions. Given the relevance of musculoskeletal conditions to a range of providers, this book can also be used for the musculoskeletal education of allied professionals such as physician assistants (PA) and nurse practitioner students. It could likewise serve as a resource for practicing medical professionals to develop and enhance their knowledge in this content area.
