Synopsis The Multidisciplinary Pain Center by : Jawahar N. Ghia
The pain center/clinic is in the stage of transition. It has come a long way since chronic pain was a nonexistent entity and patients with difficult pain problems did not receive well-deserved attention or were lost in the busy practices of vari ous specialty clinics. Thirty-five years ahead of the rest of us, John]. Bonica was the first physician who had a clear vision of a pain center's potential. Twenty years later, in response to loud public demands for relief of chronic pain, this idea was put into practice by a number of others on a somewhat larger scale. A team of specialists from various disciplines, trained in the management of chronic pain, now offer approaches ranging from simple outpatient care to inpatient hospital ization for comprehensive care including drug detoxification, behavior modi fication, and total rehabilitation of these patients. Hospitals have entered this arena with renewed enthusiasm. The pain center/clinic is now an established, ac cepted, and expanding method of providing care for chronic pain patients. The chapters in this book are based on examples of multidisciplinary projects that deal comprehensively with management of chronic pain. Aimed primarily at the pain center/clinic in the university hospital setting, this book ranges from his torical perspectives to current pain centers with their less orthodox methods of re lieving chronic pain to the future of algology as a specialty.

Synopsis Ambulatory Multidisciplinary Management of Postoperative Pain by : Jaime Ruiz-Tovar
Postoperative pain is a common problem in clinical practice that becomes chronic in approximately 10% to 30% of adults who undergo surgery, being severe in 5 to 10% of them. It is one of the main causes of chronic pain, which makes it a major public health problem. It generates in patients who suffer it a worsening of their quality of life, their psychological well-being, and disability with the consequent incapacity for work. Given that both its etiology and its consequences are complex and multifactorial, postoperative pain must be approached from a multimodal perspective: preventive, pharmacological, nutritional, rehabilitative, nursing intervention, psychological and, in those refractory cases, through surgical approaches or nerve block techniques. This book aims at first to analyze the pathophysiological and psychological bases that underlie its etiology. Next, it aims to carry out an updated review of the multidisciplinary programs for the treatment of postoperative pain that have been carried out and what their results have been. Moreover, the contribution of each of these disciplines in the ambulatory management of postoperative pain will be reviewed. Finally, we want to study the peculiarities of the management of this type of pain in the oncological patient, as well as the personal and socioeconomic consequences and the increase in other comorbidities of this important reason for consultation.

Synopsis Interprofessional Rehabilitation by : Sarah G. Dean
Interprofessional Rehabilitation: a Person-Centred Approach is a concise and readable introduction to the principles and practice of a person-centred interprofessional approach to rehabilitation, based upon a firm scientific evidence base. Written by a multi-contributor team of specialists in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, psychology and rehabilitation medicine, this text draws together common themes that cut across the different professional groups and the spectrum of health conditions requiring rehabilitation, and sets out a model of practice that is tailored to the specific needs of the client. Showing interprofessionalism at work in a range of clinical contexts, the book argues that effective rehabilitation is best conducted by well-integrated teams of specialists working in an interdisciplinary way, with the client or patient actively involved in all stages of the process. This book will be essential reading for students preparing for practice in an increasingly interprofessional environment, and will be of interest to any health care practitioner keen to understand how an integrated approach to rehabilitation can benefit their clients.
