Excerpt from Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Emerson's Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln So impressed was I with his ability that when, four years later, we became involved in a very import ant litigation, we retained him to help. I paid him the largest retaining fee, he said, he had ever, up to that time, received. So important was the litigation that a host of lawyers were engaged on each side, in cluding such men as Senator Douglas, Gov. Wm. H. Seward, and quite a number of other lawyer mem bers of Congress. When the case came on for hearing in Cincinnati, as Lincoln had not had sufficient time to prepare, he did not speak, but he was present through the whole hearing, which consumed several days. We were limited to two lawyers on a side. Edwin M. Stanton, later the celebrated War Secretary, was one of those who spoke for us, delivering a speech which he had spent a very long time in studying up and preparing. So intensely interested was Lincoln in this speech, that, forgetting the dignity of a United States Court. Abraham Lincoln was practicing law in Springfield, Illinois when asked to help in the defense of a reaper patent suit brought by Cyrus Hall McCormick of Chicago. The biography of Ralph Emerson in this book has information about the involvement of Mr Lincoln in defense of the patent suit and contains other details of the many ventures of Ralph. Ralph Emerson was an industrial owner and manager in the Rockford Illinois Water Power area located at the dam on Rock River. From the 1850's until his death in 1914, he was involved in the manufacture of reapers and other farm equipment as well as knitting machines.

This is the first comprehensive collection of remarks attributed to Abraham Lincoln by his contemporaries. Much of what is known or believed about the man comes from such utterances, which have been an important part of Lincoln biography. About his mother, for instance, he never wrote anything beyond supplying a few routine facts, but he can be quoted as stating orally that she was the illegitimate daughter of a Virginia aristocrat. Similarly, there is no mention of Ann Rutledge in any of his writings, but he can be quoted as saying when he was president-elect, “I did honestly and truly love the girl and think often, often of her now.” Did Lincoln make a conditional offer to evacuate Fort Sumter in April 1861? Did he personally make the decision to restore General McClellan to army command in September 1862? To whom did he first reveal his intention to issue an emancipation proclamation? Did he label the Gettysburg address a failure right after delivering it? Did he, just a few days before his assassination, dream of a president lying dead in the White House? All of these questions, and many others, arise from recollective quotations of Lincoln, and the answer in each instance depends upon how one appraises the reliability of such recollection.
