Over the course of fifty years, distinguished Staff Sergeant (retired) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Alert Henry (Al) Lund amassed the largest ever collection of Mountie books, magazines, and comics. From a collection of thousands, he selected approximately one hundred of his favourites for the exhibition and catalogue. In the books, magazines, and comics, the artists and illustrators have captured the image of the Mountie in a variety of styles and have often depicted him as a Canadian hero and world icon. Lund's collection was donated to the University of Alberta Libraries and will be on display at Bruce Peel Special Collections in 2017 (bpsc.library.ualberta.ca).

In the late nineteenth century, the Texas Rangers and Canada?s North-West Mounted Police were formed to bring the resource-rich hinterlands at either end of the Great Plains under governmental control. Native and rural peoples often found themselves squarely in the path of this westward expansion and the law enforcement agents that led the way. Though separated by nearly two thousand miles, the Rangers and Mounties performed nearly identical functions, including subjugating Indigenous groups; dispossessing peoples of mixed ancestry; defending the property of big cattlemen; and policing industrial disputes. Yet the means by which the two forces achieved these ends sharply diverged;øwhile the Rangers often relied on violence, the Mounties usually exercised restraint, a fact that highlights some of the fundamental differences between the U.S. and Canadian Wests. Since 1977, people have asked Jane Hall over and over what it was like to have been among the first few female members of the RCMP, and, like so so many of her peers, she has avoided answering the questions. How could one sentence do the question justice? To truly tell the complete story, Hall needed to tell some of the good as well as some of the bad. Ever since the Canadian prairies were first settled and the Mounties marched west to establish and maintain law and order, the names of individual officers have left their mark on the national landscape. Their long tradition has been honoured in many of the place names of Canada, especially in the West. In this collection, over 250 of the NWMP, RNWMP and RCMP members who died while on duty, or who enjoyed long or extraordinary careers, are remembered. Other place names are connected to a Mountie-related event or were named by a pioneering Mountie in honour of some significant occurrence. Authors William "Bill" Hulgaard and John "Jack" White, both retired Mounties, extended their research across Canada to compile the information for Honoured in Places.
