Synopsis Unknown London (Classic Reprint) by : Walter George Bell

Excerpt from Unknown London Herein you will find much concerning those things which everybody knows about, but nobody knows - the things you have known about since childhood, and have been content to leave them at that, knowing little of what they are and still less where they are to be found. I have dealt mostly with the big things that London has in its keeping, such as the Domesday Book (can you tell me off-hand where it is to be seen?); with the Confessor's Shrine (of the crowds who enter Westminster Abbey there is a big leaven who do not even know that it is there); with the massive fragments of London's Roman Wall that still survive; with that spot in Smithfield where martyrs burnt and English history was made; with the Duke of Suffolk's head and its dramatic story; with our Roman baths; with London Stone and odd others - things familiar as household words and as much apart from the average Londoner's life as are the Pyramids of Egypt. Synopsis More About Unknown London (Classic Reprint) by : Walter George Bell

Excerpt from More About Unknown London "Why don't you write a book upon London?" I have been asked. I am wholly incorrigible. Not for me are the encyclopaedists. I wrote a book upon a single street in London once - to be exact, upon the 536 yards of Fleet Street that you may measure between Ludgate Circus and Temple Bar - and a truthful reviewer accused me of writing a quarter of a million words. (I mean nothing by the phrase, accepting all reviewers as truthful, else how could they be so kind?) I plead guilty to the quarter of a million words, but I am not writing London complete on the same scale. With serious books, of inordinate length, to ray name, if any reputation I may have surviving them it must be - well, of that kind of person. My great-nieces tell me that only short-sighted people read serious books. Of one such, of which I proudly claim authorship, my artist brother assured me that it was excellent, saying that he read it at nights in bed, before going to sleep. Synopsis Unnoticed London (Classic Reprint) by : E. Montizambert

Excerpt from Unnoticed London Bond Street, because they are obsessed by the idea that to see London requires some occult store of knowledge and energy, and their eyes are sealed to the interest and beauty that lie around their path. Finally there are people like the old lady who, when she heard I was writing a book about old London, asked with astonishment, Is there anything old left in London? I hasten to add that I have not tried in the following pages to tell of every interesting place or even of all there is of interest in the places visited, - only enough, I hope, to make people go and see for themselves and have the pleasure of discovering the rest. I am not afraid that if they once go to the Chapter House they will miss any of its beauties: my dread is lest they fail to go there, from the vision of a plethora of things they think they have no time to see. For I want more than anything else to prick the curiosity of the travellers up and down the streets of the city who miss so much pleasure that they might have so easily, because they are not alive to all the interesting and un expected things that wait for their coming just round the corner. Synopsis Literary Landmarks of London (Classic Reprint) by : Laurence Hutton

Excerpt from Literary Landmarks of London The chief aims of this book have been completeness and exactness. It contains not only a great deal of matter which has never been printed before, but it verifies the statements and corrects the mistakes of the works that have gone before it. Innumerable volumes upon London have been consulted, from Stow and Strype to the younger Dickens; early insur ance surveys, containing the number and position of every house in London since houses were first numbered, in 1767, have been compared with similar surveys of the present, by means of tracings and by actual measurements of the streets themselves; the first maps of London have been examined and compared in like manner with later and contemporary plans; directories for the last century and a half have been studied carefully; and it has been possible by these means to discover and note the exact sites of many interesting build ings, the position of which has hitherto been merely a matter of conjecture or entirely unknown. Synopsis London Scenes (Classic Reprint) by : W. R. Titterton

Excerpt from London Scenes There are no streets like her streets then - misty, mysterious, endless; no houses like her grey houses throned upon cloud. She has a dreariness that is poignant and masterful, a shabbiness that is grandiose. The tawdriness of her summer mood has vanished; she wears her grey rags as a queen her robes, like a Cinderella who scorns all satins and crystal slippers though the crystal slippers are not wanting when the rain splashes up from the trans parent ways.
