This book gives clinicians a framework and tools to accurately assess moodiness in patients with ADHD, and to provide the most appropriate pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for such problems. This book reviews the assessment and treatment of moodiness in ADHD patients of all ages, but focuses primarily on children and adolescents. Chapters review effective assessment strategies for various potential causes of moodiness in patients with ADHD, then psychosocial and pharmacological treatments and their empirical basis. Specific chapters are devoted to the moodiness characteristic of ADHD itself, and to other disorders co-occurring with it such as disorders of mood, anxiety, trauma-exposure, disruptive behaviors, autism, substance use, and medical problems. The also text includes useful case summaries and tables to illustrate key clinical points useful in working with these patients. Moodiness in ADHD is a potentially vital resource for clinicians wanting to improve their skill working with patients having these challenging problems.

Synopsis Basic Guide to ADHD and Mood Swings by : Aaron Wilmoore MD

Everyday life is a roller coaster of emotions. You may feel on top of the world one day because of a high-profile promotion or an awesome grade on a test. Another day, you may feel down in the dumps due to relationship problems, financial troubles, or because you got a flat tire on the way to work. These are normal fluctuations in mood that come and go. When your mood starts to have an impact on your daily activities and in your social, educational, and vocational relationships, you may be suffering from a mood disorder.Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.Children with ADHD may also struggle with low self-esteem, troubled relationships and poor performance in school. Symptoms sometimes lessen with age. However, some people never completely outgrow their ADHD symptoms. But they can learn strategies to be successful. While treatment won't cure ADHD, it can help a great deal with symptoms. Treatment typically involves medications and behavioral interventions. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in outcome. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder of children. Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses. Or they may have trouble paying attention. These behaviors interfere with school and home life. It's more common in boys than in girls. It's usually discovered during the early school years, when a child begins to have problems paying attention.

Synopsis Back to Normal by : Enrico Gnaulati, PhD

A veteran clinical psychologist exposes why doctors, teachers, and parents incorrectly diagnose healthy American children with serious psychiatric conditions. In recent years there has been an alarming rise in the number of American children and youth assigned a mental health diagnosis. Current data from the Centers for Disease Control reveal a 41 percent increase in rates of ADHD diagnoses over the past decade and a forty-fold spike in bipolar disorder diagnoses. Similarly, diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder, once considered, has increased by 78 percent since 2002. Dr. Enrico Gnaulati, a clinical psychologist specializing in childhood and adolescent therapy and assessment, has witnessed firsthand the push to diagnose these disorders in youngsters. Drawing both on his own clinical experience and on cutting-edge research, with Back to Normal he has written the definitive account of why our kids are being dramatically overdiagnosed—and how parents and professionals can distinguish between true psychiatric disorders and normal childhood reactions to stressful life situations. Gnaulati begins with the complex web of factors that have led to our current crisis. These include questionable education and training practices that cloud mental health professionals’ ability to distinguish normal from abnormal behavior in children, monetary incentives favoring prescriptions, check-list diagnosing, and high-stakes testing in schools. We’ve also developed an increasingly casual attitude about labeling kids and putting them on psychiatric drugs. So how do we differentiate between a child with, say, Asperger’s syndrome and a child who is simply introverted, brainy, and single-minded? As Gnaulati notes, many of the symptoms associated with these disorders are similar to everyday childhood behaviors. In the second half of the book Gnaulati tells detailed stories of wrongly diagnosed kids, providing parents and others with information about the developmental, temperamental, and environmentally driven symptoms that to a casual or untrained eye can mimic a psychiatric disorder. These stories also reveal how nonmedical interventions, whether in the therapist’s office or through changes made at home, can help children. Back to Normal reminds us of the normalcy of children’s seemingly abnormal behavior. It will give parents of struggling children hope, perspective, and direction. And it will make everyone who deals with children question the changes in our society that have contributed to the astonishing increase in childhood psychiatric diagnoses.

Synopsis ADHD and Depression by : Dr John Tyler

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a disorder that begins in childhood. It usually persists for years and results in significant deficits in cognitive, academic and social development. it is found to occur in about 3-7% of children, and persists in 36-60% of them into adulthood for an overall adult prevalence of about 4.5%.It is found that as ADHD continues to play a major role in the individual's life, demoralization occurs to a large extent leading to comorbidities, such as substance abuse or depressive symptoms, as an effort to cope or due to internalization of the underachievement they face on a chronic basis. Many adults with ADHD did not receive adequate interventions during childhood, resulting in chronic occupational and social impairments which seriously reduce the quality of life. This adds confusion to the diagnostic features, as they may present with symptoms suggestive of anxiety or depression, but have other signs and symptoms of complicated ADHD, which has taken its own course. Overall, the occurrence of ADHD with depression is found in about 9-50% of patients. It is important to assess all patients reporting with ADHD for the co-occurrence of primary anxiety disorders or for secondary symptoms of anxiety arising due to the primary ADHD. It is also essential to discriminate between the two so that the primary condition is treated rather than the secondary symptoms. It is known that individuals with both conditions coexisting have a higher risk of suicide, poor job outcomes, and broken relationships, as well as putting a greater cost-burden on society. The distinction may be assisted by the knowledge that fixed depressive affect or suicidal ideation is rare with ADHD per se, which is usually associated with stable moods despite deficits in executive functioning. Some symptoms of ADHD and depression are a lot alike, and that can make it tough to diagnose and treat those conditions. For example, trouble with focus is one of the signs of both depression and ADHD. And if you take medicines to help with your ADHD symptoms, they may affect your sleep or eating habits both of those can be signs of depression, too. In children, hyperactivity and irritability can be symptoms of depression as well as ADHD.Also, ADHD can lead to depression when people have a hard time with their symptoms. Children may have trouble getting along in school or with playmates, or adults may have issues at work. That can lead to deep feelings of hopelessness and other signs of depression.Doctors don't know what causes either condition, but they both seem to be linked to your family history. People with depression or ADHD often have a parent or other family member who has it as well.

Synopsis Attention Deficit Disorder by : Thomas E. Brown

A new understanding of ADD, along with practical information on how to recognize and treat the disorder A leading expert in the assessment and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder dispels myths and offers reassuring, practical information about treatments. Drawing on recent findings in neuroscience and a rich variety of case studies from his own clinical practive, Dr. Thomas E. Brown describes what ADD syndrome is, how it can be recognized at different ages, and how it can best be treated. This is the first book to address the perplexing question about ADD: how can individuals, some very bright, be chronically unable to "pay attention," yet be able to focus very well on specific tasks that strongly interest them? Dr. Brown disputes the "willpower" explanation and explains how inherited malfunctions of the brain's management system prevent some people from being able to deal adequately with challenging tasks of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. His book is an authoritative and practical guide for physicians and psychologists, parents and teachers, and the 7 to 9 percent of persons who suffer from ADD/ADHD.
