Other features of special interest were numerous cases of the sale of rotten eggs in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the frequent discovery of benzoate of soda in excess of the amount tolerated by the present Act, the occurrence of saccharin in soft drinks and the frequent misbranding of these goods; the fact that added copper is still found occasionally in imported French peas; also that a good many cases had been found in which decayed raw materials had been used in food manufacture, or in which food products had become de composed subsequent to manufacture. The food officials also agree in denying that the new law is responsible for the increase in the price of foods, which is in line with the advanced cost of labor, of rent, of clothing. 'the one exception, ' says an authority, 'is in the articles formerly sold in competition with those that were adulterated or misbranded. These bring their normal prices, while the adulterated ones bring less.' Neither is the food law responsible for the increase in the price of milk, which is caused by the agitation for clean milk. That element in her nature has been cunningly catered to by shrewd advertisers until it has become the predominant trait of character in many. It is too much the custom to jump to the conclusion that an article is a bargain because it is advertised at a remark ably low price.
