Synopsis Monks of a Separate Cloth by : Darren Speegle
A couple are caught in a violent snowstorm as they ascend notorious Harrow Mountain in Chi Bay, Alaska for a getaway at a Forest Service remote cabin, only to discover that what awaits them is far worse than any blizzard. An archbishop must prowl the streets of the ancient Roman city of Trier, penance for the ultimate sacrilege. On an earth decimated by plague, a survivor fraught with guilt carries on his person a specialized strain of that plague with the teetering intent of unleashing it upon an unsuspecting world again, this time to even more devastating effect. A novelist is tormented by hellish visions of Henry Fuseli's macabre painting The Nightmare. A man haunted by family tragedy takes his girlfriend to Lake Garda, Italy, where secrets reside, secrets that could destroy both of them. These and other strange, dark avenues await the curious among the monks of a separate cloth.

Synopsis Monastic Practices by : Charles Cummings
For three decades, Monastic Practices has been a valued resource for English-speaking aspirants to monastic life. In this revised edition, updated and expanded, Charles Cummings, OCSO, explores the common practices of the monastic life in order to rediscover them as viable means of leading persons to a deeper encounter with God. How do monks and nuns occupy themselves throughout the day? Have they modernized their lifestyle or is it still cluttered with medieval customs? Could any of the monastic practices be of use to those outside the monastery? A certain wisdom is necessary to know how to use such practices and how to give oneself to them until they lead one to God. After long monastic experience, Cummings shows us how the ordinary things we do constitute our path to God. In the art of living life, he argues, we are always beginners, searching for God through our concrete circumstances and actions.

Synopsis Dressing Judeans and Christians in Antiquity by : Dr Alicia J Batten
The past two decades have witnessed a proliferation of scholarship on dress in the ancient world. These recent studies have established the extent to which Greece and Rome were vestimentary cultures, and they have demonstrated the critical role dress played in communicating individuals’ identities, status, and authority. Despite this emerging interest in ancient dress, little work has been done to understand religious aspects and uses of dress. This volume aims to fill this gap by examining a diverse range of religious sources, including literature, art, performance, coinage, economic markets, and memories. Employing theoretical frames from a range of disciplines, contributors to the volume demonstrate how dress developed as a topos within Judean and Christian rhetoric, symbolism, and performance from the first century BCE to the fifth century CE. Specifically, they demonstrate how religious meanings were entangled with other social logics, revealing the many layers of meaning attached to ancient dress, as well as the extent to which dress was implicated in numerous domains of ancient religious life.
