Synopsis Advances in Statistical Methods for the Genetic Dissection of Complex Traits in Plants by : Yuan-Ming Zhang

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been widely used in the genetic dissection of complex traits. However, there are still limits in current GWAS statistics. For example, (1) almost all the existing methods do not estimate additive and dominance effects in quantitative trait nucleotide (QTN) detection; (2) the methods for detecting QTN-by-environment interaction (QEI) are not straightforward and do not estimate additive and dominance effects as well as additive-by-environment and dominance-by-environment interaction effects, leading to unreliable results; and (3) no or too simple polygenic background controls have been employed in QTN-by-QTN interaction (QQI) detection. As a result, few studies of QEI and QQI for complex traits have been reported based on multiple-environment experiments. Recently, new statistical tools, including 3VmrMLM, have been developed to address these needs in GWAS. In 3VmrMLM, all the trait-associated effects, including QTN, QEI and QQI related effects, are compressed into a single effect-related vector, while all the polygenic backgrounds are compressed into a single polygenic effect matrix. These compressed parameters can be accurately and efficiently estimated through a unified mixed model analysis. To further validate these new GWAS methods, particularly 3VmrMLM, they should be rigorously tested in real data of various plants and a wide range of other species.

Synopsis Molecular Plant Breeding by : Yunbi Xu

Recent advances in plant genomics and molecular biology have revolutionized our understanding of plant genetics, providing new opportunities for more efficient and controllable plant breeding. Successful techniques require a solid understanding of the underlying molecular biology as well as experience in applied plant breeding. Bridging the gap between developments in biotechnology and its applications in plant improvement, Molecular Plant Breeding provides an integrative overview of issues from basic theories to their applications to crop improvement including molecular marker technology, gene mapping, genetic transformation, quantitative genetics, and breeding methodology.

Synopsis Ecological Genomics by : Christian R. Landry

Researchers in the field of ecological genomics aim to determine how a genome or a population of genomes interacts with its environment across ecological and evolutionary timescales. Ecological genomics is trans-disciplinary by nature. Ecologists have turned to genomics to be able to elucidate the mechanistic bases of the biodiversity their research tries to understand. Genomicists have turned to ecology in order to better explain the functional cellular and molecular variation they observed in their model organisms. We provide an advanced-level book that covers this recent research and proposes future development for this field. A synthesis of the field of ecological genomics emerges from this volume. Ecological Genomics covers a wide array of organisms (microbes, plants and animals) in order to be able to identify central concepts that motivate and derive from recent investigations in different branches of the tree of life. Ecological Genomics covers 3 fields of research that have most benefited from the recent technological and conceptual developments in the field of ecological genomics: the study of life-history evolution and its impact of genome architectures; the study of the genomic bases of phenotypic plasticity and the study of the genomic bases of adaptation and speciation.

Synopsis Molecular-Genetic and Statistical Techniques for Behavioral and Neural Research by : Robert T. Gerlai

Molecular-Genetic and Statistical Techniques for Behavioral and Neural Research presents the most exciting molecular and recombinant DNA techniques used in the analysis of brain function and behavior, a critical piece of the puzzle for clinicians, scientists, course instructors and advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Chapters examine neuroinformatics, genetic and neurobehavioral databases and data mining, also providing an analysis of natural genetic variation and principles and applications of forward (mutagenesis) and reverse genetics (gene targeting). In addition, the book discusses gene expression and its role in brain function and behavior, along with ethical issues in the use of animals in genetics testing. Written and edited by leading international experts, this book provides a clear presentation of the frontiers of basic research as well as translationally relevant techniques that are used by neurobehavioral geneticists. - Focuses on new techniques, including electrocorticography, functional mapping, stereo EEG, motor evoked potentials, optical coherence tomography, magnetoencephalography, laser evoked potentials, transmagnetic stimulation, and motor evoked potentials - Presents the most exciting molecular and recombinant DNA techniques used in the analysis of brain function and behavior - Written and edited by leading international experts
